Now, I am an aspiring artist, still in high school, and hoping to land myself into a respectable design school, for interior design. Now, an interior design student, along with pencils and drafting utensils, will typically need watercolor, colored pencils, pen, etc. However, I wish to have a wider range of items for a more varied portfolio. That being said, (and this is a very tall order I know) I am looking to buy products that are:

-vegan

-environmentally friendly

-artist's quality

-preferably within Canada (my country of residence) or at least, within the continent of North America.

so far, I've learned that Derwent and Winsor & Newton are both environmentally friendly, and many (though not all) of their products are vegan.

Yupo paper is both vegan and environmentally friendly.

graphite and willow charcoal are fine as well.

I have heard of other companies having vegan products, but I haven't found anything on their website, nor have I seen much of their environmental efforts, so I have contacted them by email.

It would really help if you guys would help me learn more! Tell me of any green vegan art supplies brand that you know of, please and thank you!

Non-vegan art supplies are one area where I'm willing to compromise. I HATE painting with synthetic brushes.

Yes. I tell myself that they are obtained ethically, but I know they're probably not

well, there are paint brushes with animal hair, watercolors with ox gall, paper with rabbit (or other animal) skin glue, gesso and varnish often have animal skin glue as well, some paints use charred animal bones or crushed insects, oil pastels have animal fat, some canvases are stretched with animal skin, etc. Of course, there is also the problem of heavy metals and other toxic chemicals that are harmful to the body that can be found in even non vegan products. I've found some brands that have mostly vegan products, as I can just avoid the non vegan ones, however, its always great to have help 8)

Here is something that a friend of mine wrote up awhile ago on the subject. She gave some links at the bottom to more resources and brands. I just don't know how eco-friendly the brands are.

It is hard to find eco friendly artistic paints that don't compromise on quality. That is why we started our company. We provide professional quality watercolor paint, and soon we will offer oil paints, that are 100% vegan and cruelty free.

We have made sure that our pigments are natural and that our formulas are solvent and petroleum free. I hope you will take a moment to review what we have to offer and if you have any questions please feel free to drop us a line.
