At a time when everyone is going green, most people are unaware that the FBI is using anti-terrorism resources to target environmentalists. Here is a guided tour into an underground world of radical activism and an introduction to the shadowy figures behind the headlines. But here also is the story of how everyday people are prevented from speaking up for what they believe in. Like the Red Scare, this "Green Scare" is about fear and intimidation, and Will Potter outlines the political, legal, and public relations strategies that threaten even acts of nonviolent civil disobedience with the label of "eco-terrorism."
What do you guys and girls think of this book? Have you read it? Would you read it?

Personally I thought it was good, I learned a lot more about this movement than I did before. It's truly sad to read brave activists standing up for what they believe in being treated as criminals. It's an addicting read, I went through this at about 250 pages in four days.

What are your thoughts?

I haven't read this yet, but I want to get my hands on a bunch of these AR books, especially ones dealing with the ALF and other AR activists willing to engage in direct action. I've been eying that Steven Best book "Terrorists of Freedom Fighters?" for awhile now. Was going to get it sent to my library, but I may just buy it.

They are both about how the government has worked to vilify those who fight to liberate animals and the environment. \t\t\t\t\t\t
Currently I'm reading the book Operation Bite Back about Rod Coronado but once I'm done I will look into those. It's also a great read if you haven't read it yet.

Another one I've been meaning to check out. My reading lists grow faster than I can keep up with them!

Coronado wrote one of the essays in "Terrorists or Freedom Fighters". I've heard of "Operation Bite Back" and I've been meaning to read it.

I'm loving it so far. Very intellectually stimulating.

I just bought "Bold Native" today, so I'll come back and post what I thought about it.

Watched Bold Native last night. I loved it.

My favorite aspect was that they really tried to show that all sorts of people can be involved in animal liberation. It could be your doctor, the cheerleader sitting next to you in class, or the guy who cuts your hair.

The only part I questioned was the inclusion of the "Feral Child". I worry that people who aren't necessarily pro-animal liberation will watch that part of the film and use it to reinforce their negative stereotype of ALF or other animal liberation groups.

The feral child? who was that? The guy tied up in the basement? I don't remember.

Feral Child was Riley, the girl he was dating at the beginning of the movie and later had sex with. Feral Child was referred to several times in the movie as being an animal liberator who would go too far, and then we find out that she was torturing the people who own factory farms.

Yes! I couldn't shut up about this movie for ages, haha.
I got into trouble on a forum for posting about it (and was ultimately banned, for arguing that I didn't think I'd broken the forum rules).

Riley / the Feral Child's actions mean she's branched off from the ALF, for those who don't know. She'd now qualify as ARM, ALB, Justice Department, etc. I wonder if you're right, sequoia, if perhaps they should have made it more clear that Riley was no longer acting in a way that the ALF considers acceptable. It's clear that Sonja (especially) and Charlie don't support her actions, but is it clear enough to the non-ARA audience that they represent the ALF position and Riley represents another?

I think that the only time during the movie that it is clear that she would not be considered part of the ALF is at the beginning, when Charlie is stating the ALF guidelines. I'm just wondering if it was necessary to include that scene.

Yeah, I think the scene was sort of unnecessary. I honestly don't know why it was put in there. The film was about the ALF, not the other groups.

Yes, doing what his workers do to the animals. Fortunately it's a very short scene.

Definitely see it. It's a great movie, even without the animal rights aspect.
