First inhabited island lost to global warming:

"Disappearing world: Global warming claims tropical island

For the first time, an inhabited island has disappeared beneath rising seas. Environment Editor Geoffrey Lean reports

Published: 24 December 2006

Rising seas, caused by global warming, have for the first time washed an inhabited island off the face of the Earth. The obliteration of Lohachara island, in India's part of the Sundarbans where the Ganges and the Brahmaputra rivers empty into the Bay of Bengal, marks the moment when one of the most apocalyptic predictions of environmentalists and climate scientists has started coming true.

As the seas continue to swell, they will swallow whole island nations, from the Maldives to the Marshall Islands, inundate vast areas of countries from Bangladesh to Egypt, and submerge parts of scores of coastal cities.

Eight years ago, as exclusively reported in The Independent on Sunday, the first uninhabited islands - in the Pacific atoll nation of Kiribati - vanished beneath the waves. The people of low-lying islands in Vanuatu, also in the Pacific, have been evacuated as a precaution, but the land still juts above the sea. The disappearance of Lohachara, once home to 10,000 people, is unprecedented."

http://news.independent.co.uk/enviro...cle2099971.ece

I think this really hammers home the point that we have already passed the point of no return when it comes to the environment.

I fear, however, that the average person still won't 'get it' until New Orleans is totally submerged next Hurricane season or Ellis Island is underwater.

The Western World which used to be a beacon of light leading the less fortunate out of the darkness is exposed as the headlight of an onrushing train.

That's especially scary when you live on an island. I wonder what PEI is going to be like in, say, 100 years. Still above water? Mostly sunk?

That is really scary. Hopefully some people will take notice and try to change some things (I know, wishful thinking......).

Not to distract from this disaster, but the article's claim that this is unprecedented is quite far from the truth. Countless islands and human communities have become submerged, due to sea level rise, in the past.

Rising water levels is not the only factor that can make an island submerge. Some sink becase the rock they're sitting on shifts or sinks. Others wash away over time because of erosion. Other causes I don't know about. Sometimes it's a combination.

No doubt. Those "sunken cities" that hit the popular press (Alexandria, Troy, Port Royal, Atlantis ( )) are almost always due to some cataclysmic event associated with volcanism. The majority of them, however, are due to eustatic sea level change that affects millions of square miles of island and coastline over great periods of time. There's not much to show of these sites for two reasons, (1)there hasn't been as much sea level change in recent times when you find large populations, and (2) the effect of "wave milling" on submerged sites with out much or any stone architecture. It takes very little time for most remnants to be washed away.
