Thailand, of course, is a vegan/veggies paradise. However, as it is also a major tourist destination, prices are often shamelessly inflated while the food you get served is equally often uninspired and all too often just a brown riced tasteless cliche with a leaf of lettuce, flowered cucumber and a sculptured tomato passing as the bouquet of garnish.

That said, there are exceptions. If you plan on getting to Chiang Mai in the north you should be sure to check out the Vegetarian Society. It is a large house-like place that opens (and closes) early serving a buffet style assortment of vegetarian foods. The prices are incredibly cheap and the surroundings are rustic. There is also a small second hand clothing shop and mini market attached. All in all it is a fun place to meet a lot of local veggie regulars while getting food you know is vegetarian.

Check before you go as it closes on a dizzying array of holidays (respect for all, no!?). Not elegant by any stretch, but a great option especially for those on a budget or those who just don't get off on spending a lot on food.
