Glyphosate is an herbicide that is used to kill plants in a farmer's field except for the genetically modified (GM) crops that have been planted (like GM corn and GM soybeans). Glyphosate-based chemicals are also used to eradicate aspen and birch trees on regenerating forest stands to make room for commercially valuable conifer trees like pine and Douglas fir. Run-off from tracts of land that have been sprayed with glyphosate-based chemicals can speed up the process of eutrophication in our waterways. Eutrophication can cause out-of-control growth of algae blooms.
