So I've tried to do this before - and I've always given up. I'm hoping that by getting myself a kind of support system using forums I'll do better.

I'm going vegan - basically a complete 180 from how I usually eat. For me, my real motivation is about health - I'm only 23 years old, but I'm obese, I have constant migraines and stomach upset, and the pain I get in my joints and feet is just...ridiculous. At the rate I'm going, I know I'm headed for a heart attack likely in my 40s, or if I somehow manage to avoid that, any number of diseases could take me down.

I'm starting out by doing a juice fast for 3 days (maybe more, but I'm trying not to overwhelm myself) to just kind of...jump start everything. The movie "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" has really inspired me for this, along with "Forks over Knives" and "Food Matters."

Welcome I'm new here too. I have been a vegan for a little over a month. Don't go too hardcore with your fasting and what have you. You need to do a lifestyle change not starvation. I tried to be vegi once before and I failed with in a week. I did not educate myself properly on vitimins, minerals, carbs, protiens etc. Now I'm going real strong and enjoy what I eat. I'm not sure how much you need to lose but I've lost 30lbs in the last year most of which coming in the past few months. Every week I lose about 1-2 lbs. I have about 10-15 more to go. I have tried dieting and what not since I was 25 and none of it worked I am now 31 an finally im doing well. Don't give up or get frusterated. I'm just afraid that juice fast is going to make you hate getting healthy. Have you started exercising? Not sure if you can exercise if you are fasting.....

Welcome to the forum. I watched that documentary too and have been on a juice fast for about a week and a half. I've had impressive results so far.

Quote:

I was exercising regularly at first, but the other day I had some trouble finishing my workout. I started feeling really weak and had to stop. So basically you might be able to exercise in the beginning of a juice fast, but if you're fasting for longer than a week, exercising might not be a good idea. Just listen to your body. Thirty minutes might be all right. I wouldn't recommend more than that though. I started feeling weird after about 45 minutes. I haven't exercised since then and have still been loosing weight. Anyway, I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I just thought I'd throw that out there since fasting was mentioned.

Yes, I think that when it comes to exercising when fasting - just listen to your body. Don't push yourself to exercise if you feel weak/weird when you do, but if you feel good to go - then do!

A big thing about juice fasting that this movie showed me is that you should be juicing your own vegetables and fruits. Before when I read about juice fasting I was always thinking "What? Like...just buying some OJ and cran juice and doing that?" Which would have been bad if I had tried that, at least for a long period of time. That's what I like - was the focus on getting a full range of nutrition. You're still "eating" something with your juices.

As for the juice fast making me hate eating healthy - I've felt better on this juice fast that I have in a very long time. More energy, I don't feel sick - it's great.
