I absolutely love ghost stories! More specifically, "true" ghost stories. I don't really believe in ghosts, but it does make for good reading.

So anyways, I was on chat last night and ScareyVegan was telling me about her haunted house in New Orleans. Pretty weird stuff! Does anyone else have any ghostly experiences that they'd like to share?

There have been 3 things that have happened to me that I can't explain. The first was when I was a teenager. I had just turned off my light and was lying in bed. I heard a man's voice say my name into my right ear. I started screaming "There's a man in my room!!" over and over. My mom came in and told me that I must have been dreaming. But I wasn't asleep.

The second thing happened while I was in university. I was alone in my apartment. It was cold, so all the windows were closed, and the floors were all concrete and I never heard anything from the neighbours. I was sitting on the couch doing some homework, when I heard someone strumming a guitar. At first I thought "how pretty" but then I was like "where the hell is that coming from?" As soon as I thought that, it stopped.

The third thing happened a couple years ago. I was in my sister-in-laws place, playing on the computer. I got the feeling that I was being watched. I turned around, and for a split second, I thought I saw the shape of a man.

Okay, not very scary, and definately not convincing proof of ghosts, but like I said, I can't explain them. As an atheist, I don't believe in an afterlife, and I don't really believe in "souls". I think of it more as energy that is converted and reused over and over. Maybe ghosts are energy that haven't been converted yet. Maybe they are some other form of life that has yet to be discovered or explained. Or maybe they are just figments of over active imaginations. I don't know. But it is fun to creep yourself out every now and then.

So anyways, what are your thoughts on ghosts? Any stories?

I have a story!

A couple of years ago, I had gotten up at 5 am to go to the bathroom. All the lights in the house were completely out. When I got out of the bathroom, the lights above our kitchen counter were on. They were barely on (they are dimmers), but on nonetheless. My husband was fast asleep and I would have heard him go in there, anyway. What's even *weirder* is that the next day, I got a phone call from my landlady. She sounded real strange and then proceeded to tell me that her husband, my landlord, had shot himself in the head last night. I ran to get the newspaper the next day to see what it had to say about it. The story was that he was very drunk and had called the police around 3 am, saying he was going to shoot himself. When the police came, he started shooting at them and had a standoff with them until he shot himself at 5 AM, the very time the lights in my kitchen came on.

What makes this all yet weirder is that he and his wife lived in the apartment we were renting from them for 10 years before they rented it out.

Other than that, I lived in an old house that always did strange things. I would always hear someone come in the front hallway, only to discover noone there when I opened the door. There was no one else living in the house at the time, so it got kind of creepy because it happened a lot. In that same house, I had just left it and gotten into my car when the front porch lights started blinking on and off for a couple of seconds. Again, no one else was in the house. Weird.

BTW, this thread is very appropriate considering it's Friday the 13th *and* there's a full moon out tomorrow!

Oh I have plenty of ghost stories I could tell here! Some I'm not really comfortable talking about, so I'll keep it to a few of the tamer ones.

I once was taking my dog for a walk along a road that had houses along one side and woods along the other. I began to feel like there was someone behind me, so I turned around and there was an old woman standing there looking at me. I thought "oh, she's just taking a walk" but when she didn't pass me (the dog had stopped walking) I turned around again and she was gone.

After my grandmother had died, my mom and I were home alone one night. We were in the kitchen when we started hearing footsteps coming up the basement stairs. They would stop, at what sounded like the top, and then start all over again at the bottom. I (having no fear) opened the door to the basement but nobody was there. I shut it and it started again. I looked one more time, but nothing. It went on for a while.

I used to have a hard time falling asleep because there would always be footsteps pacing around my bed.

Oh, and don't play with Ouija boards! After asking for a "sign" once, I had a candle fly off my dresser! That didn't stop my friend and I though and eventually I got an obsessed (demonic?) spririt who started out with a sense of humor but got really, really scary. You think those pointers don't move around on their own? Think again!

that follows me around. He takes my stuff and puts it back days later...sometimes he calls and when I answer it's a really weird noise on the other end of the phone. No matter where I've lived or what phone number I've had it always happens at least 3 or 4 times a year. I can feel him sometimes and it makes every hair on my body stand up. Other things have happened too. This has been going on since I was a kid. I catch him in pictures sometimes. Here's the best picture so far. It was taken on my grandparents property in the holler in West Virginia. The shed I'm in front of is super old...was built in the 30's. Look at the reflection in the screen door laying down to the left. See the face? Creepier yet, look to the left way in the back. See the ghost with the green jacket? Save it zoom the pic. It's definitely a figure; transparent nonetheless. That is an old defunct garden. Nothing was back there that would have made that image. And, it was an overcast day in the fall so the face on the door isn't a reflection of any kind. The smoke has always bothered me too. I doubt that Dad would have been smoking while taking the picture. It's hard enough for him to handle the camera being blind and all that I doubt he would have tried to jugle a cig too. Anyhow, let me know what you think.

I'm ignoring the ghost and saying hi Voluptuous in your avatar...

No really, thanks for showing your pics RuthieB, I made up a line or two half joking about it but my cookie session expired I think (duoh) but no worries and no OF COURSE nothing to do with Friday 13th. As for ghosts, what use are they?? Thats my first question?? Urgh.. They need to get real and stop hovering in mid air like faires IMVHNO...

<in my very humble and noble opinion> If your ghost calls you again, just give it the Ghost Busters hotline number... Yeah I can hardly resist being funny about it, sorry if it offends but cheers at

the same time, for well "airing your ghost/s" I suppose is the expression... <<Hug>> to melt away your nuisance ghost, and if it becomes more of a nuisance, then well, we'll just have publicly humiliate it (if you think that would help)... We could send it in to You've Been Framed OR Caught in the Act type programmes!!...I mean you could!!...

If theoretically I WERE supposedly FOR REAL??? to have a ghost I would try to piss it off as much as I could personally...

oooh, those are some scary stories, and MsRuthieB's pics!

I do belive in spirits and I belive there are some in our house. I have many stories that have happened to me and my family, but I'll just tell you my scary happenings now. I have never seen anything, but I have heard things many times, however some of my family members have seen things. Everything that I heard was like a breathing sound.

First experience- I was awoken from slepping in the middle of the night feeling sick, I felt really hot and my stomach hurt. So, I stayed up in my bed and watched tv for awhile. At the exact moment I turned the tv off, I heard this evil sounding breath. I just froze, I had that paralyzing feeling. I turned the tv right back on and turned the volume way up! I actually just stayed in my room, I was to scared to get up. Later on that morning, I was in the bathroom getting ready and I heard it again, but it sounded even more evil. I started screaming and crying, I was screaming for someone to come upstairs and help me, but noone came up, so I ran downstairs so fast!

Second experience- I was in the kitchen making breakfast, my mom was in the dining room, and my sister was upstairs when we all heard a loud breath sound throught the house. Noone else was home, but us.

Third experience- I was taking a bath, I was just relaxing and I heard a soft breath sound. It didn't really bother me that time.

Fourth experience- I was in the bathroom, I was sitting there about to use it, but I heard a breath yet again and I got up and left the bathroom quickly!

The third and fourth ones happened quite recently. These stories might not sound that scary to you guys, but if it happened to you!

Cool stories everyone! And interesting picture, MsRuthieB.

Here are two links to sites that have tons and tons of submitted ghost stories.

http://www.castleofspirits.com/ is really good, but the owner is very sick right now, so quite often the site is down and there are broken links and stuff.

http://www.theshadowlands.net/ghost/ is good too, I just found it the other day.

Both have some really good stories, but you have to read through a lot of stupid stories. Some are just really lame, like "Me and my friend were up late at night telling ghost stories, and then we heard a noise, and it was a ghost!!" or stories that start with "I was drinking and..."

It's like that episode of the Simpson's, where Homer is telling a ghost story on Halloween:

Homer: And then...his wife walked through the door!

Lisa: So?

Homer: Well, she was dead. I guess I forgot to mention that part. Anyway, she hit him over the head with a golf club!!

Bart: And?

Homer: Don't you remember? He used to play golf all the time and it really bugged her.

Lisa: You said he bowled a lot!

Homer: Doh!!

Hi Ruthie! Missed you . . . Outstanding pics and stories; I like this thread!

I grew up in a spook house. I don't want to call it "haunted" because the spooks never harassed us or anything, we just coexisted.

When I was a kid my parents bought a house that had been built by a successful building contractor in the 1900s-1920s. This house was really outstanding, possessing incredible workmanship. Well, after we moved in we found out that the builder's 3 year old daughter had been swept away off the front porch and drowned in a flash flood. A few years later he was working underneath a car in the driveway and it fell on him and killed him.

The spirits in the house exhibited varying levels of manifestation, but they never appeared "at" anyone (if that makes sense), they were just carrying on their daily routines and we happened upon them from time to time.

My grandmother was the first to notice them, and refused to sleep in the guest wing of the house at all. My parents always denied their existence but many other people felt them and a few even saw a small girl merrily trotting up the steps to the second floor in a nightgown. I felt blasts of cold air, had dogs go absolutely ape right before cold air would pass by, heard tapping and once heard a girl's voice laugh out loud at a Johnny Carson joke on television. The little one used to like to watch tv

Everyone who has lived in the house since my parents sold it in the early 1980s have confirmed similar experiences as well.

I've got some others that I can tell when I work up the motivation . . .

I see ghosts all the times...all of my family can. It goes beyond just having our homes haunted, I can sense them in certain places. Sorry don't mean to get all "Sixth Sense" on people. I'm not as good at seeing them as that kid is anyway. I have some weird premonitions too.

Well anyway one time I was left alone for a week there was this one ghost I named timmy. He used to 'cry' and do all sorts of things. A couple of times a weeks he would hit all the wind chimes in the house (my mom collects windchimes) and that used to freak me out a bit. As time passed though I felt safe around him and I even used to 'call him' to me by hitting the wind chimes.

Weird.

Oh, Ruthie, that "smoke" you see in the pic is very familiar to me, I've seen it before. I've heard numerous explanations but the term "spiritual energy" best defines what I think it is. We stayed at a place once in the mountains that had the walls covered with photos taken which included that sort of haze. The proprietor was convinced that it was indeed spiritual energy.

We took some digital pics of my son on that trip and in a couple of them his entire body was almost obscured by that very stuff. We showed them to the owner and he confirmed that he felt it was indeed spiritual energy. He further went on to explain that the reason it was centered around my son was because it was drawn to younger, innocent children, and that he had seen it many times.

All my hair is standing up on the back of my neck and arms from reading these. This stuff is so fascinating, yet so disturbing at the same time.

This is all starting to remind me of that movie, The Others. Once again ***shiver***!!!

Loving this thread....great photos MsRuthieB, I think you're very priveleged to have a spiritual friend travelling with you. One you can sense anyway as I believe we all have 'guardian angels' as some call them with us. A friend of mine lives with a ghost & when I visit her I can't stay inside the house for long because I feel like I'm suffocating. I don't think it's bad or harmful at all just so much energy it overwhelms me! A shop I used to work in also had a resident ghost. Lights would come on & things would move around but the story that freaked me the most was that the owner was sitting on the toilet at the end of the day after all the staff had left & the toilet roll started spinning faster & faster. Because he'd had a long day & isn't afraid of the spirit world at all he just put his hand on the toilet roll & yelled out 'stop it'. Apparently it worked but if that happened to me...I would FREAK!

Well, I am fairly sure there was something weird about the house I grew up in. I have a pretty good imagination, so I'm not sure what was real and what was my little girl imagination working over time, but I do know that I always had trouble sleeping in that house and never really ever felt alone there, like I always felt there was another presence there. I always slept with the door open so I could hear my parents down the hall, one night I woke up and saw a person walk past my room toward the kitchen/living room. So I figured my mom had woken up and was getting something to eat, so I got out of bed and followed her. But when I got to the kitchen there was no one there. I walked back to my parent's room and both my parents were fast asleep.

I also used to occationally sleep in my parent's room when I was young becasue I was so scared to sleep alone. One night I watched weird little shadows climb up from the floor and move up the wall, then disappear into the ceiling. They did this for about an hour and then suddenly stopped.

There are more I will add later.

I use to get so annoyed with that, but I've honestly found that just acknowledging they took it and asking nicely they put it back works. Sometimes I even ask for help if I'm the one who misplaced the object. I always say thank you.

I've had experiences all of my life. My family refused to think any such experiences were real, so as a child I kept it to myself. When I was younger, it would often frighten me. As I grew, I came to accept it. I've realized that none of my experiences were negative because of a spirits doing. It was only because I didn't understand what I didn't know. I feel fortunate now to know the presences that many others ignore.

Ruthie, I'd love to get a better look at your pictures, but they are so small. Very cool that you get it on camera!

Hi Bank! I missed you too!

Erin-Maybe I'll play around in PhotoShop later and see if I can get the cuts from the main picture bigger. It truely is facinating.

Hey, did you ever hear of shadow people? I believe we have them living in the house I currently own. The house was built in 1919 and has I'm thinking it has a great history to it. One day I'll actually research it.
