Hi everyone,

I've been away for awhile...unfortunately dropped off the radar of veganism too (sob!). I'm back on board though and would love to get some opinions of 'mock meats' and 'cheese' - So far I've tried only a few from terrible to really yummy (can't remember what brand the terrible was but I enjoyed Tofurky slices and jerky).

I would love to know what your favorites are and what ones to avoid. I don't have a lot of money to experiment and would love to try some that people say are favorites.

Oh - also I tried a freeze-dried "chicken" at a home we visited about a year or so ago - I do not remember the name - it was ordered online and was in a huge brown box (shipping box) - does this ring a bell to anyone as I would love to get some (it was soy).

Thanks!
I really like Morningstar breakfast links, Smartdeli's "ham" slices, and several varieties of Gardenburger (original, black bean chipotle are good). I'd recommend avoiding veggieburgers that try too hard to imitate meat, like Boca Grillers.

EDIT: Didn't realize this was the Vegan section. Gardenburger Originals are not vegan. My bad. It's always a good idea on veggieburgers to check the ingredients. A lot of Morningstar and Gardenburger products have eggs and/or dairy.

I can't really help you with the mock-cheeses. After having not eaten any in so long I found that I've just lost my desire for the flavor, even when I do find it in stores. There are a lot of good mock-meats out there though. I've tried a few different brands when I've found them in our local stores, Smartdeli ham (as Dormouse said) is good, so are Smart Dogs. I am a fan of the Boca Crumbles and use those in pasta sauce, tacos, and chili when I'm cooking for family. The Boca 'Chik'n Nuggets' are also pretty good. I've made them for my younger cousins before as a snack and they gobbled them right up. Whatever you decide to try, you may want to double check packaging. A number of these companies that make vegan 'meat' also have some other items that include egg/milk. Regardless of brand, I still always try to check the ingredients. You never know when some companies will alter a recipe.

The grain meat company makes something called a "celebration roast". Its amazing, we use it as our holiday centerpiece (and on weekends). They also make sausages that are WOW. I hated vegan cheese for so long I was afraid to try daiya but I did and it blew my socks off.

I think Boca burgers are ok, but my kids love 'em and they're not even vegetarians. I really like the Boca chicken patties, though (so do the kids). Lightlife also makes a ground "beef" that I really like. I also like the Boca crumbles. Daiya is the best vegan cheese out there, in my opinion. It's best where you would need a melted cheese. Check their websites to find a store near you.

http://www.lightlife.com/product_det...=gimmeleanbeef
Gardein seven grain nuggets, and chik'n scallopini.
Boca chikn' patties.
Daiya is my favorite. I find a little goes a long way, and the cheddar makes a grilled cheese just like plastic wrapped singles! It freezes well-I divide it in two zip bags, one gets frozen.

If you have a Trader Joes--their Soy Chorizo is amazing! Great taco flavor.

Unfortunately, it really is just a matter of taste. I do not like at least half of the items posted here that others say are good. I can, however, vouch for the daiya cheese...I think it's great, IMO. Welcome back and good luck this time around!

Gardein products are fantastic. I tend to buy other brands more though just because they are cheaper, are on sale more often and easier to find. Field Roast and Tofurky are also really good but again pricier than brands such as Lightlife, Boca, and Morningstar Farms. I'm not totally sold on Daiya. Everytime I've had it the texture was pretty repulsive but it also wasn't used sparingly so that might've been the issue. I love teese, galaxy, and Follow Your Heart cheeses though.

For faux meats, I like Boca chicken patties and nuggets, Morningstar Farms Meal Starters chicken strips (most Morningstar Farms stuff is not vegan, but this one is), and Gardein beefless tips.

For cheese substitutes -- I like the Galaxy vegan slices (make sure they say vegan on the label as they also make casein-containing cheeses), and Follow Your Heart Mozzarella. Not a big fan of Daiya -- the texture is slimy and it sticks to my teeth.

The "chicken" stuff you are talking about -- might it have been soy curls? I've never had them, but from what it sounds like they might fit the bill?

I recently discovered Field Roast sausages. WOW!

I actually like soy hot dogs just fine, but these are totally amazing. They're juicy and everything.

Field Roast sausages are far and away my favorite mock meat. They're then only thing I buy regularly. Besides tofu and tempeh, that is, but I don't consider those to be mock meats.

Au Natural mock chicken nuggets are vegan in some areas so if you see them check the ingredients. Anything yves is always good but sometimes they contain real cheese. If their product is labeled as vegan its vegan. Daiya is amazing. I don't know if there is a bulk barn in your area but their vegetarian chicken broth is vegan.
