We've been trying to avoid using meat replacements lately, preferring grains and legumes. But every once in a while I get an itch to make something that doesn't work as well with beans or grains.

I was in the frozen food section and I saw Gardein brand scallopni "cutlets." I bought them just to keep them on hand for a quick dinner "just in case."

I cooked them and then made a lemon, caper, butter (Earth Balance) sauce and served it with some heirloom fingerling potatoes. Served it to my daughter who took one bite and said, "Mom! Why did you use meat???"

Yeah. This stuff was freakishly close to real meat taste and even texture. It took some doing to convince her that she wasn't eating meat.

Very tasty and great for a quick meal.

I did that with take out once. I'd ordered vegan kung pow chicken and after a couple of delicious bites, I was suddenly filled with horror. "I think they used real chicken!" It took quite a bit of convincing from the manager, that I had not been given real chicken.

I freaked out my partner the same way, the first time I made his mother's very meaty spaghetti sauce, which tasted exactly the same with the faux meat, I'd used. Exactly.

I love Gardein chicken, but I didn't care for the beefless tips or the "turkey".

lurve the chick'n and the beefless tips too. Have to sautee the beefless tips just right tho, otherwise the texture gets all wrong. Too bad I can't get Gardein at all in the town I'm living now :-***(

i love the gardein products honestly. the breaded chicken strips are phenomenal. i had craaaaaaaaaaved some kind of alternative to chicken fingers since going vegan, i did a happy dance in the store when these came out. the scallopini is good but i usually opt for the plain "meatless chicken breast" since it's just as versatile as a regular chicken breast. i've made curry with it, stir fries etc or i'll cook it whole and once it's browned a bit on each side i'll dump diced tomatoes or tomato sauce and assorted sauteed veggies or even SALSA on it , throw a lid on and let it simmer down for a bit, toss some Daiya shreds and garlic plus seasoning (am i the only one that puts that stuff on everything?) on top before serving. omg so good.
i usually have a box of strips and a box of breasts in my freezer at all times lol. pretty well live off these things

I'd probably freak out too. I once bought some fake meat that was so realistic I had to give it to omnis housemates, as it freaked me out so much. You know next time to save the packaging in case you have to convince your daughter again!
