French Web site to Send Bush Pretzels for Peace

Tue Mar 18,11:05 AM ET

PARIS (Reuters) - U.S. citizens have turned on French fries and toast to vent their frustration at France's anti-war stance on Iraq (news - web sites). Now the French have joined in the food war -- with pretzels.

A French Web Site is urging people to send pretzels to U.S. President, who fainted and fell off a sofa in January 2002 after gagging on the salty snack.

The Web Site, www.bretzelforbush.com, says the pretzels will be stored at a secret location before being sent to the White House in a historic mass action.

The retaliation follows moves by some in the United States to change the names of French fries and French toast to Freedom fries and Freedom toast.

The pretzels are on sale for seven euros ($7.56) each, with one euro going to a children's charity. So far some 250 euros have been raised for the charity.

"We think that to oppose war is not to be against the American people, but simply against the politics of the Bush administration," the Web Site says.

After the fainting incident, Bush lamented not heeding his mother's advice to chew pretzels before swallowing and his wife Laura joked he was now "practicing safe snacks."

I'd love to!

In keeping with this theme: go to www.fallonfey.com and watch the new Salma Hayek one... Great "freedom fries" rant!

But I'm thinking: does this mean it's now gonna be called Freedom Bacon too?

Thats how its brought by the (European?) press.

I understand there is some sentiment in it, but I dont know if people realize who suffers when French restaurants are being boycotted.

I suppose most French restaurants and companys that sell French products are actually owned by Americans.

So who is the ?

Note: This is not meant in a cynical way. Its a mere economical observation without judgement.

In the wake of all this "French" replacing, is the Statue of Liberty going to be torn down in favour of some sort of "Freedom" statue? It was, after all, given to the U.S. by France as a gift to commemorate the friendship established between the 2 countries during the American Revolution.

Thanks for posting this, I was trying to remember who did this. I totally agree!

Somewhere else (NPR?) I heard, what an insult to the French that we take their name off our most nasty American food. Like French fries and French dressing are their national pride or something.

Are people going to start boycotting the English language too? Quite a bit of it comes from French, thanks to the Norman Invasion of 1066.

Or how about boycotting the whole country? As the French did help us win the revolution against English rule.
