I'm clearing out lots of stuff from mi casa. So, I have the choice to give my stuff away to either the Humane Society thrift store with proceeds going to their animal shelter (which is what i've been doing).

I also have the option of posting all these goods on Freecycle, which is a website where people post free items given and wanted.

So, help the animals directly, or help people down on their luck (hopefully)?

What I tend to do - items that are of immediate practical value, such as appliances and basic housewares, I try to find someone who needs and can't afford them. More "luxury" goods (i.e., jewelry, decorative items, etc.) I donate to charitable resale/thrift shops - I think they do more good there.

I know a number of freecyclers whom I would not consider "down on their luck" so much as thrifty people, and even one who has plenty of luck but just likes free stuff.

I vote for animal shelter.

Unless you find or know of someone who is in real need of what you have to give away. Because those animals are in dire need of care and can't get it except by our goodwill.

I'd go with donate them, because second hand stores still sell things cheap enough that people benefit from getting cheap goods at very low prices anyway, and you help the animals too. Also, I agree not all freecycles are down on their luck or poor, some people just like a good bargin, or like to recycle.

Recently someone on Freecycle put an ad that they were looking for a free Flat Screen Plasma TV to put in their bedroom. impressive.

Humane Society Thrift store gets my vote. I've been scammed before on freecycle. I have freecycled things to people who have given me stories about how they can't afford clothing or toys for their kids only to see them selling those exact items I've given them on Craigslist within a few hours.

I had a weird experience giving some things away for free on Craigslist. I would never invite a stranger onto my doorstep again like that. If I wanted to give something away I'd donate, go to a swap, or leave it on the curb.

Animal shelter because this helps both animals and people who may be down on their luck or simply smart shoppers. I shop at second hand stores when funds have been thin and good. I can mix a hoitie-toitee jacket with second hand shop skirt and no one would know the difference.

I do give free things some places tho' for example, our salvation army stores give clothes and furniture + Free to people who are really down on their luck. And share amongst friends and family all the time.

There are people trying to scoop up everything they can on freecycle so they can re-sell at the flea market. I didn't even know HS had thrift stores. I always thought it would be a good idea for every Animal organization to have a thrift store.
