France is facing fines and penalties after Europe's highest court found the government has failed to do enough to protect its hamsters.

In a case that stretches back three years, the European Court of Justice said Thursday that the French government hasn't adequately conserved the remaining few hundred Great Hamsters of Alsace still living in a small enclave in eastern France.

May I say that I find the name Great Hamsters of Alsace absolutely delightful?

If I ever establish my own kingdom, there will be a peerage with that name.

Hahaha, that's exactly what I thought when I first read it!

Anyways, I'm glad to see someone took notice and is putting the pressure on France to protect the hamsters.

The entire concept of wild hamsters just blows my mind. I know they have to come from somewhere, but I've always thought of hamsters as little caged animals. So are all types of hamsters native to Europe?
