Unfortunately our otherwise vegan 2 year old son is hooked on baby milk (he had problems breastfeeding and this was back when there was a lot of nonsense in the news about 'the risks of too much soya' so we opted for organic cows milk formula...)

Now we can't get him off it...

I'va started mixing rice milk in with it to gradually ween him off, and he protested a bit tonight but not as much as I'd thought he would. His older brother (4) is almost totally vegan, but grew up on breast milk and soya or rice milk. He's fit, healthy, and fully approved of by the health professionals here in Swanage!

Any other tips for weaning off the formula milk for a 2 year old? His 'botbot' is his favourite thing!

PS I found this link (http://www.sacn.gov.uk/pdfs/smcn_03_06.pdf) which if you're in the UK is really useful for checking whether your formula is vegetarian or not - some formula milks have fish-based EFAs in! Mmmm, nice!

Just had this message from Cow & Gate in the UK - I'm appalled!

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for your query about Organic milk.

You are right the Organic milk can not be classed as vegetarian .To process

some of the ingredients in the milk we use some animal products, rennet in

particular ,and therefore the milks cannot be classified as vegetarian.

Please do not reply to this email. If you have any further questions please

either Ask Us again, or contact the Careline on 08457 623 623.

I guess what you're doing sounds like a good idea. Just mix some cow milk in with rice milk, and vary the amount until there's no cows milk. I guess that''s how I'd do it.

Next year I'll be trying out this baby thing for the first time, so I'll get my own experience with picky eating.
