Foods you thought you'd hate, but turned out to like

Many years ago I had a boyfriend who was worried I wasn't eating right. I was broke and eating Cost-cutter bread and frozen pot pies and ramen. He went to the co-op and brought me back a bunch of groceries. This was very nice and much appreciated, except for the jar of millet.

I picked it up. "This is birdseed."

He says, "It's millet. It's really good, you cook it like rice. Try it."

I repeated, "It's birdseed."

The millet stayed in the cupboard. Now and then I would glare at it. Damn birdseed. Couldn't possibly taste good. Then one day when I was hungry and there was nothing else in the house. I cooked the millet and put salt and butter on it. And it was good! Hunger is the best sauce, they say, but I genuinely liked the light nutty flavor. I have since learned to cook it in more interesting ways, but just plain with butter and salt is still tasty to me.

What foods did you think you'd hate?

i was always afraid to try a veggie burger, i thought i'd hate it b/c i didn't like the name

they turned out to be really good.....

and soy milk, oh gosh i'd smell it and make a face, never had enough courage to try it, then one day i did and i hated it. but now i don't have a problem drinking it

i still don't like beans, but i think i'm betting better

but for the most part, i try new food b/c i see someone eating it, and if someone eating eat, then it shouldn't be that bad. so i just give it a chance ...

Quite simply, tofu. It's so widely reviled by people who had it in the 70s that it has a horrible reputation. I can understand why, since I have on occasion eaten some bad tofu, but it's really great when prepared right. If only I could convince certain people to give it another try.

I have a long list of foods I would never eat before and that I eat all the time since I became veg*n. Lets see... tomatos, mushrooms, ketchup, salsa, tofu, beans, asparagus, artichokes

I didn't like many veggies when I was young. LOL.

I hated zucchini until I got really poor. I had a delivery route, taking hot meals to senior citizens every day. In the summer they would give me excess tomatoes and zucchini from their gardens. You know how people overestimate the amount of zuke they need to plant.

I was really hungry. I broke down and cooked some zucchini. I sauted it with the tomato, thinking that would kill the taste, and instead discovered one of my favorite dishes. Zucchini is delicious! How did I not know that before?

all indian food.

I went to a buffet once and it was one of those cheap ones where everything is creamed - it looked like a cart with trays full of baby food. No thanks. I think I had plain rice & naan.

5 years later (and after going veg), I discovered the wonders of indian food. there's no going back now... mmm, samosas...

Gosh, they're so much I thought I would never like. Let's see there was -

* hummus

* granola bars (especially the all natural ones w/ fruit)

* black beans

* salsa

* raw tomatos in salad

* various organic foods

In H.S., I thought I'd NEVER like any of the above and now, I LOVE them! I guess my taste buds changed once I became more health-conscious and willing to try different things.

Thanks, Formerbaboon!

As a kid I didn't like most vegetables (including eggplant), and now I eat almost every vegetable. Not too many years ago I thought I didn't like tofu or soymilk, and now I have them all the time. I guess my palate matured...
