I've talked about this before, but with the recent announcement that they really don't know if the wheat gluten that was found in the pet food has entered the human food or not....I'm getting nervous AGAIN!

How much can I eliminate from our diets?

Meat: eliminated

Dariy: only organic

Fruits and Veggies: I try to buy organic fruits and vegetables, but honestly, there just aren't that many available in our local store.

Soy and Soy Products: Trying to limit. (two reasons: I have heard that it would not be a good thing to have too much of it in my little boy's diets and 90% of soy is genetically engineered.)

NEW Wheat gluten: How on earth do I do this one???? ugh! Okay, I'm thinking of buying organic flour and baking our own bread. But, wheat is in everything, our cereals, pasta...I don't need to list, you know.

Rice: Switched to organic with the new adding of the human genes (gag)

Food in cans: The lining of the can is bad, I could look it up, I just remember, not good.

Genetically altered foods: We have no idea which foods are genetically altered because we have no labling.

That leaves fresh organic fruits and veggies and organic rice milk. I have kids, this isn't going to work. I'm afraid to feed our food to my family.

How do I do this. I swear if I lived alone I would have an eating disorder just from reading this stuff, but my "rational," "grown up" self is trying to feed my family a balanced, nutritious diet. I don't think it is possible anymore.

The gluten found in pet foods was produced in asia, where they do not have the same pesticide restrictions that we do. I would assume that as long as you avoid gluten produced in asia, you'll be fine.. that is, if the toxin is even an issue in humans.

As far as everything else goes, there are a lot of conflicting reports and you could likely find one to draw any conclusions you like. Limit things that are obviously not healthy (i.e. lots of high fructose corn syrup, artificial everything, highly preserved foods), and get a good balance of other things (except meat, of course ).

The stress of worry about all of this is going to be MORE harmful than not eating the "perfect" diet -- which doesn't exist anyway.

It's just that products don't always list their country of origin. They list the distributers, which is no help.

I don't buy anything with corn surup in it, my son gets really hyper if he has it. I have switched to only natural sugar or maple surup for sweeteners. The only processed foods I buy are cereal and bread and I'm going make our own bread from now on. I guess it really just boils down to the labeling issue. The companies aren't required to do it in the U.S. Why don't we have the right to know what we are feeding our children? I don't want them to be lab rats for all the experiemental garbage they are producing. I literally walk through the store bewildered. I can think of reasons not to buy everything. I can't get passed it. There are so few foods that I feel good about feeding them anymore. If I could just come up with 5 days of breakfast, lunch and dinner that were totally healthy, nonruined foods, I would buy them exclusively and rotate them throughout the week.

It really makes me sad. My passion is cooking. Dinner time/family time is my favorite time of the day. Our dinners resemble foods from a restaurant, I light candles, play music, it's used to be such a wonderful time for us. But anymore fear is ruining it. I wish I could go back to being ignorant about our food...but that wouldn't be good either, would it?

It's just worries me that they are doing these things and there is really nothing that we can do about it. I fear for our health for the future.

Well there are lot of us do, but is your diet life style better know than it use to be ? ...sounds like it is . You have seem to have a great awareness of what is going on around you and thats good .....but not when its fear based

If you mental spin out just by say , looking at a product to buy and think , my god what is it , or what are they doing to us , its probably not a good way to look at things .

Its a good time to get strong , if things turn to custard down here, with 6 billion people on the planet it would only take a pandemic , dramatic weather change, earthquakes or what ever , to tilt the balance .

Thats when people like you can , with your awareness , that can work through your area of thinking will be a help to others

Thank you, sometimes I have a hard time seeing the bright side of things when I get reading to much.

Our diets are far better than they were a couple of months ago. As I read and learn, I switch to safer products. I am going to change to organic heirloom plants and seeds for our gardens to try to avoid the genetically altered varieties. I'm going to start making more of our foods from scratch, such as bread and eliminate the few prepackaged items that have still been on our menu. I'm lucky, I am a stay at home mom/wife, so I have the time to do these things.

Thank you again for putting a positive spin on my bad attitude. I really needed that.
