Food Trials

My sister (I'll refer to her as Nitza) says she'll go vegetarian, and vegan if she is provided with four vegan equivalents for the foods listed below. Whether or not Nitza follows through is a different matter; trying this is still worth it.

So, this is the four foods she wants good vegan equivalents for:
  • Cheesecake
  • Cinnamon Rolls
  • Lemon Poundcake
  • Ribs

Keep in mind: Nitza is a picky eater. The paradox of choice dictates that I cannot find all equivalents, so by getting help from VeggieBoards I can expand my radar.

Daiya has a vegan cheesecake. Pillsbury cinnamon rolls are apparently vegan too.
For all those foods, she can go on Google and type "vegan..." and recipes will show up. Then it's a matter of error and trial to find one she likes.

Doesn't seem like going vegan is something she really wants to do herself, though, considering all the "I'll do it IF..." demands.

I agree. I'd seriously question why cheesecake, ribs, cinnamon rolls, and lemon poundcake are more important than cows and chickens not being subjected to a lifetime of suffering and a horrific death.

That is not to say that there are not vegan cheesecakes, etc. But that is beside the point.

By the way, a lot of the Pillsbury stuff that used to be vegan now has lard in it. Read the labels!

So, yes, you can try the vegan stuff. But I'd suggest something totally different: Tell her she can still have those four things if she otherwise goes vegan and see what happens. My guess is this is a bluff. But if it's not, cutting out all animal products except those specific four things would really go far in reducing animal suffering, and on the off chance she's honest she'll begin to change her tastes anyway.

The first three are easy but there isn't a really an alternative for ribs. I guess it depends what she likes about them. It sounds like she doesn't want to go vegan though. I think people often see veganism as cutting out certain foods but I don't see it that way. It is just refusing to use things for myself that were taken without consent.

I was thinking the same. Tell her to continue to eat that stuff and cut out everything else. Reducing some suffering is better that nothing.

I agree with the above commenters. Just tell her to keep eating ribs occassionally and maybe the other things and just be vegan in all other ways. Tell her that veganism is not about perfection and that such as mostly vegan diet would still reduce animal cruelty by 90% compared to the average person.

Or, get her the other vegan equivalents (apart from the ribs) and just make the ribs as the one exception.

Have her try Morningstar BBQ riblets- they're vegan, and great on a sub roll

I like seitan riblet recipes like this one-
http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2007/05/barbecued-seitan-ribz.html
Instead of the 2T tahini or nut butter I use 2T olive oil. I've made seitan without oil and it was very bready. I guess the nut butter is supposed to be a sub, but I don't chance it.

I'd love to try the Daiya cheesecake, but really there are so many vegan desserts. I like Trader Joes vegan creme cheese, but never tried a cheesecake

The Pillsbury cinnamon rolls I last checked had dairy-maybe frosting? They're not hard to make and I think Trader Joes are vegan

Pound cake is easy. Robin Robinson has a great one using silken tofu in either her 1000 Vegan Recipes, or Vegan Planet.

This is very different from the one I've made, but looks good and sounds right!

Thanks!

As for the Pillsbury cinnamon rolls: http://prnt.sc/dkes08

I'd like to find products and not just recipes.
There is a vegetarian restaurant in Evanston, IL, called Blind Faith Cafe, that has seitan riblets as a menu item. They are vegan and delicious and taste almost, though not 100%, like a pig's chest plate smothered in barbecue sauce.

Good tip, Silva, on the Morningstar riblets. I look forward to trying them.
