Ok, so Im having a little 'problem' here. Ive always been a Daddy's Girl, and having said that, I grew up going camping and going fishing with him. It's been awhile since we've been fishing, and last time we went, I was just vegetarian(vegan now) and honestly, I didnt know a thing about animal cruelty. Since then, Ive studies a lot through PETA and other sources, and I hate all the mean things going on towards animals. My question is, do any of you fish? And do you think it would still be cruel if instead of catching it and keeping it for someone to eat, if I just realeased it and put it back in the water?

Or does anyone have advice on how to tell my dad that I dont want to anymore? I mean, it will be hard and I will probably get made fun of because my WHOLE family does this, and it's a lot of them.

My whole family fishes, hunts, eats meat. youre not doing it for your family, your doing it for the animals, the ones being killed.<br><br><br><br>
Fishing is cruel. I think even releasing them in cruel, and no one is going to get me to say otherwise. Sticking a sharp object through someones face, pulling them out of where they live/what they breath, and then throwing them around, is cruel.

Pain, fear, and forsight of death transcend species. It's wrong to make an animal feel any of these. Period.<br><br><br><br><br><br>
Simply tell your father that you don't want to fish. "Dad, I think fishing is wrong. I would prefer not to go fishing." If they judge you or make fun of you, ignore it.<br><br><br><br>
Or if you a typical teenage girl you could pull a typical teenage girl routine. E.g. "aaww...I don't wanna go fishing, daddy! It'll be boooring." or "But the new episode of the Real Life is on today!" or "But (insert boy's name here) is going to call me today, Daddy!"<br><br><br><br>
The second one sounds more fun to me, but don't use them both together. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/laugh.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="">

yeah, i don't like the idea of sticking a hook into the fish's lip then yanking it out of the water (it's like someone suddenly dunking you underwater...you know that first shock...yeah, the fish have to deal with that shock until they're back in the water...so imagine someone holding you underwater while they pull a hook out of your lip) and, the fish sometimes swallows the hook...which can't be fun...so i personally am not for fishing...but if that's what you really love doing, go for it<br><br>
are you at the age where you have to buy a fishing license? and if so, do you go fishing a lot or a little. if you do need a license and don't go fishing a lot, you could just say "i don't know dad. it seems a waste to spend (x amount of dollars) to go fishing (x amount of times) a year...." (then, if you're on private property, just tell him you don't really feel like it...ask him if you two could hike instead...i don't know if any of these would work, i hope you come to a solution <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

Don't worry my brother goes fishing quite often, he makes fun of me because I never want to go with him and I am forever telling him that I think its cruel but at the end of the day he respects me being a vegetarian and tries to keep him going fishing as discreet as possible. I feel a bit bad because I'm pushing my beliefs on him, I don't know what else I could do.

My family is big on fishing. Actually, haven't gone fishing, camping, or any of that great stuff in quite awhile. But they like it, especially my eldest sister. I used to, but I stopped (long before I turned veg.). The thought of the fish... the pain they must feel. Not to mention the poor worms. I couldn't handle it.<br><br><br><br>
I get teased for it. But no matter. I usually just wander around while they fish. Which, even if I did enjoy fishing, is so much funner! You can explore the place, bird watch, fish watch sometimes, find pretty rocks and feathers, etc. I love doing that. I could do it all day long, every week. ^_^<br><br><br><br>
Just ignore it if they tease. Say you don't need to fish, it's uninteresting, tell the truth that you don't like it, that it goes against what you believe in. Believe me, after you tell them it is so much easier. They'll get used to it, even if they do complain (even years after)! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)"> So you can just sit there with them, ignore the wiggling fish dying on the hooks, and be a companion as you usually would.

You have alot of good advice here, you just have to tell your father that you dont want to perticipate in an activitiy if it results in the injury or death of a fellow being. If he doesnt understand, I don't think you should beat around the bush and make excuses, because it could cause problems in the future. If he asks you to go fishing just tell him why you choose to live a cruelity free lifestyle. It's not worth so many poor fishies getting hurt and killed because you dont want to get teased or stand up to your father.

I'm at about the same point. Last time I went fishing I had just given up eating fish [I was pescetarian for a month before becoming lacto-ovo] and fishing is pretty big in our family. I think next time my father asks me to go with him I think I'll just go along but clear with him first that I'd rather not have a rod in the water.

Ok guys. I really shouldnt've started this thread. I was just being a wimp about standing up to my family. I know I will hate myself if I do it, and Ive also done a lot of research about it. So if I want to do something, I will throw some corn out there so they can eat and not be eaten! Here's a site that I read that almost 50% of all catch and release fish die withing the next week, so I know Im not going to anymore. <a href="http://www.fishinghurts.org/FAQ.asp" target="_blank">http://www.fishinghurts.org/FAQ.asp</a><br><br>
I hope you guys dont think Im a bad person for posting the topic. And thanks for the feedback!

Congratulations are you decision to not fish! Fishign was a big part of my life prior to being a vegetarian. I still go on fishing trips but i walk through the meadows and watch the wild horse graze. Its actually beautiful and relaxing <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">
