i have been going though alot in my relationship, and really fell hard for my new neighbor. i have been going through the motions for about 3 months now and can't seem to get back on track with my life. i decided to go to a psychic yesterday and today. i feel robbed and foolish. she told me alot of true things about my life which was impressive, she definitely has something going for her. but she charged me $175 for 3 candles, and some oil that she wanted me to rub on all of my cats heads so she could figure out which one of them is carrying a curse. that is when i almost went ballistic. my cats are so loving. how could any cat be carrying a curse? i left there and tossed her candles and stupid oil out the window while driving home. i need good vibes sent my way, PLEASE. i can't get this man from across the street out of my head, according to her he is my soul mate and will be my life partner. that is how i feel deep down, maybe she just sensed my desperation and wanted to justify it so i would return? has anyone had a similiar experience?

Honestly, she's probably just making things up to get your money. The fact that she ripped you off that badly for some candles and oil are a big point of suspiscioun. Almost anyone could talk about you and your neighbor being meant for eachother if they knew that you had fallen for him.

I personally think all psychics are fake, but this one seems like even more of a scam artist. By returning you are only showing the psychic that you are gullible and easily cheated out of your money. Try discussing your feelings with a close friend or inviting the man over for dinner. Go for it!

They probably figure they won't make money if they tell people what they don't want to hear.

I'm sorry things are so difficult. I am someone who reads Skeptical Inquirer and generally think they are all deluded or con-artists, but even when I am really stressed and desparate and see an ad for a psychic or something, it seems tempting. Just don't go back.

Being lovesick is one of the topsiest-turviest feelings in the world, but that psychic is simply making things worse for you. She's taking advantage of your vulnerable state, as all psychics would. I can't believe she even said that your one of your cats is cursed. That would absolutely end it there for me.

Now is the time to confide in a trusted friend. And at least you're venting your frustration here, I think that helps.

I had a class in college which included something about psychics. We watched tapes of people getting readings and there thoughts afterward. They all thought the psychics knew a surprising amount of information about them. But when you watched the tapes it showed the psychics saying a lot of generalizations that people fit into their own life themselves. They also threw out a lot of words and then commented on that subject when there was a reaction to the word by the customer. The customer only remembered the things that fit their life and not any of the other things that were said when they were inaccurate.

I just mentioned all that because she might not know as much as you think she does.

Do a search on "cold reading" and you will find lots of info on how to be a successful "psychic". Like here. I think many people honestly believe they are psychic, and have just learned to use techniques such as cold reading by accident. If there are any real psychics out there, which there may be, they are welcome to apply for the James Randi million dollar prize.

There is tons of stuff out there on John Edwards, too. The skeptic I am, when I first watched him, he seemed very convincing. I enjoyed watching it because it gave a little willing suspension of disbelief that maybe he was for real. Likewise with the psychic police shows. Then I did a little research on what they don't tell you on the shows.

She preyed on your weak moment. Sorry to hear about this. Why didn't you just leave when she tried to charge you so much may I ask?

Most of all, don't put yourself down for what happened. That will only make you feel worse. Like I said, sometimes I find psychics very appealing in times of great stress, and I've known very smart, skeptical people who not only paid money, but totally believed what a psychic said to them in their time of need. One instance was a similar to yours. The person was in a difficult marriage, had thoughts of someone else, and the psychic said exactly what they wanted to hear, that this someone else was the true love. That couldn't have been further from the truth.

In fact, I have a Buddha 8-ball program on my desktop that I use when I'm stressed. I don't believe in it, but when I'm feeling down, it's fun to pretend it can answer all my problems. Maybe that would be something to stick with instead!! Or better yet, social support, exercise, and making a game plan for your personal situation would probably go a long way.

I believe some people are psychic. And I believe the pshycic you talked to is just into making money, not helping people. As far as your cats go, I do not know of any cursed pets, though I know I have cursed at my pets a few times. LOL. And about the guy next door, go get 'em girl.

I am so sorry you were ripped off. I am even more sorry that you went to her because you were feeling bad in the first place. She kicked you while you were down. Just talking to a good friend would've been so much better.

This question is an aside, is the whole oil, cursed animal, candles thing a typical ploy? Ie., "You must get rid of your cherrywood desk. It is cursed! Let me dispose of it for you!"

What would be the kind of psychic that wouldn't make you feel ripped off?

I was fortunate enough to find a psychic astrologer many years ago. She did many readings for me through the years and was astonishingly accurate!

And she only charged $25 per hour.

There are good psychics out there. You just have to do your homework first. I would recommend finding a good astrologer instead.

I am skeptical* myself about psychics, but James Randi is a charlatan and a liar himself. Beyond that, he's a ginormous tool.

(*skep·ti·cal also scep·ti·cal (skĕp'tĭ-kəl)

adj.

Marked by or given to doubt; questioning: a skeptical attitude; skeptical of political promises.)

Now to the topic at hand:

You definitely got ripped off if you were charged $175 for some candles and oil (or was that part of the reading package?), but I don't know what you can do at this point?

Regarding the stuff that was true: how specific was it? Part of the problem with psychics is that we want it to be true, so we take non-specific information and apply personal meaning to it (i.e. "make it fit").

I recommend to anyone, if they're going to see a psychic, be very careful about giving them any information, then see what they give you.

Yeah, it definitely seems like you're seeking for advice on whether or not to seek after this neighbor. I mean, you've already posted your situation here in a different thread, and now you've gone to a psychic in the hope that this person will somehow supernaturally tell you what to do. It seems like there really isn't anyone in your life that you're willing to talk to about this stuff, there isn't anyone you trust with the secrets of your heart. You really want someone to tell you what to do in this situation, so that you can have confidence in your decision. Even moreso, it seems like you're afraid that if you try to enter a relationship with your neighbor, you will get hurt just as much as you are by the current relationship you're in. Sure, you worry about what other people might think about you, but I think the core of your distress is that you're worried about getting hurt again.

I don't think you're going to find what you want in a psychic. I think it's unlikely you're going to find what you need here on the internet. I think your best bet is to find someone that you really trust who's willing and able to advise you, and to never let go of said person.

YMMV.
