Feeling Bloated?

One of my wife's main arguments about not becoming vegan is the bloated feeling she feels after eating beans or complex carbohydrates like brown rice. I have let her know that if you eat more complex carbohydrates which include brown rice and fruits and little fat then the food will pass through your body quicker and you will be able to eat more calories without getting fat.

Still, the feeling of "bloated" is something I can understand. I eat a high carb lifestyle and I can't deny that sometimes I feel uncomfortable, but I just see it as a season of life and something to be dealt with and overcome.

Do you feel bloated too sometimes with your eating lifestyle? What makes you feel bloated? Any advice?

Chew your food very well and drink lots of water throughout the day. :)

Yeah, I do and it's really frustrating. I just try and mix up my meals so I'm not having the things that make me bloated all the time. Have you tried using pearl barley rather than rice? Or quinoa? That helps me. Also mixing it up with fresh fruit and veg. Rather than padding out meals with beans, how about chucking in an extra veggie rather than kidney beans etc? Maybe serve with potato instead of rice? Starting the day with a high fibre breakfast helps me. I use oatmilk instead of soy too.

Bloating on a continual basis is not a normal part of being vegan. It is fairly common for people to experience bloating, gas, and discomfort when changing their entire way of eating, and it can take a while for the body to adjust to a higher fiber plant based diet. Eventually it gets better once the gut flora reestablishes itself and your body becomes accustomed to eating far more plants.

There are ways to cook and prepare beans so that they don't cause so much gas and discomfort. I found these articles that sum it up pretty well:

On a personal level, I have found that going too low in fat can cause me some constipation (which in turn makes trapped gas and causes more bloating), despite eating a ton of high fiber vegetables and fruits each day. Adding in healthy fats in small amounts like chia seeds, ground flaxseed, avocado, nuts/nut butters etc helps move things along for me and I don't experience the bloating. Too much however can also cause some gas and discomfort. From trial and error, I find that peanut butter is hard on my digestion but tahini, sunflower butter, or almond butter does not have this effect. I also discovered through trial and error that I have an intolerance to a certain plant family that includes chard, quinoa, beets, and spinach. For a while I was having terrible cramps, diarrhea, and bloating until I removed these four foods from my diet. I had a whole garden full of beets I was growing and eating and I was experiencing digestive issues all summer and noticing increasingly that it was worse right after consuming beets and quinoa.

I also had a hard time with tofu when I first went vegan, so I had to stop eating it for a while and reintroduce it very slowly. Now it causes me no issues at all. I started replacing meat with beans in 2007 and I remember experiencing a lot of gas, but over time and slowly introducing new foods like this, my body became accustomed and it went away. I can put away up to four servings of beans in a day no problem now lol. Though sometimes brown or green lentils can cause a little discomfort.
