(NaturalNews) After years of sweeping the issue under the rug and hoping no one would notice, the FDA has now finally admitted that chicken meat sold in the USA contains arsenic, a cancer-causing toxic chemical that's fatal in high doses. But the real story is where this arsenic comes from: It's added to the chicken feed on purpose!

Even worse, the FDA says its own research shows that the arsenic added to the chicken feed ends up in the chicken meat where it is consumed by humans. So for the last sixty years, American consumers who eat conventional chicken have been swallowing arsenic, a known cancer-causing chemical. (http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/loc...)

Wow! I'm not usually a fan of Natural News but they're actually citing sources here. Sure makes you glad you don't eat chicken doesn't it?

Arsenic is in most drinking water.
I'd imagine that any creature drinking water...would contain traces of arsenic.
I'd bet that I have traces of arsenic.

Wait... was the FDA denying that it was possible that meat could have tiny teeny amounts of arsenic??? Its the denial that bothers me the most. It's common, and really no big deal. Its in the dirt in tiny amounts!

Actually most of the arsenic is passed through the chickens. Their litter is then often used as fertilizer. I know the eastern shore of Maryland has VERY high arsenic concentrations due to this. This drug is horrendous for the environment...

Very true. Apparently the FDA has been saying for years that the arsenic was only being passed into the litter (still a huge problem) and not getting into the human food supply but a recent study shows otherwise:

In a study of 100 chickens, the FDA found that chickens that had eaten the Roxarsone had higher levels of inorganic arsenic - as opposed to organic arsenic, which is naturally occurring - in their livers than chickens which had not eaten the Roxarsone. Inorganic arsenic is more toxic than the naturally occurring form.
Roxarsone has long been a concern for environmental groups worried about its presence in chicken waste and the resulting effects on human health in areas with high chicken production. Maryland state lawmakers have attempted to force a ban in that state, saying the arsenic ends up in the Chesapeake Bay.
So not only is it an environmental issue people could be eating it too, splendid.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it being in the chickens isn't a big deal, but large amounts of the stuff get passed through the chickens. It has been a hot button with environmentalists for a while and the compound never seems to get banned. I'm in grad school and I sent one of these articles to my advisor earlier today (we do research on organic compounds in the environment) and she was pretty disappointed the environmental impacts weren't mentioned. But ultimately he response to it being pulled was "IT'S ABOUT TIME!!". So sad that things like this are used so extensively without consideration for health and environmental effects...

saw it on FB from natural news too....so sad the FDA is so corrupt....obviously, for being in there for 60 yrs, apparently it's not really a real health risk, but it's just the point.

It's a HUGE environmental problem though.....

Anyhow, since there is already a thread on this the two will be merged... Thanks.

It doesn't matter...some day the E. Coli and other nasty stuff from the meat industry is going to get so powerful and wide spread that even the most vegan of crops won't be safe any more. Unless we can somehow punch through the powerful lobbying groups of the animal agribusiness industries and effect social change in time.

I wouldn't be so quick to say it's not a health risk. People have been moving toward eating more chicken for decades because they have been told it's healthier. At the same time, cancer rates have been rising. Correlation between them?

A few years ago we had to get angel food ministry and their meat. While I started eating few of their chicken products it tasted funny and the chicken didn't even taste like it did in my childhood. So I was wondering what was going on with the chicken and meat we got. That was right around the time I started getting sick on meats and didn't know why until we started researching factory farming. It disgusting what they don't stop .
