Some of my favourites:

"Now we must redefine tool, redefine Man, or accept chimpanzees as humans."

- Louis Leakey, after learning from Jane Goodall that chimps make and use tools.

"Now I can look at you in peace; I don't eat you anymore."

- Franz Kafka

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

- Gandhi

"Millions long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon."

- Susan Ertz

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Okay, quote away!!

One more thing, I am looking for a quote I saw a few days ago, I think it was on this site, but I'm not sure. It went something along the lines of "men never commit acts of cruelty so cheerfully as when they do it in the name of religion." Does that sound remotely familiar to anyone? Thanks!

This is a paraphrase of one of the most inspirational quotes for us aritsts. I cant rember who its by originaly but Shostikovich (the composer) was fond of it.

True art lets one see into the soul of the artist and by seeing into the artist's soul one sees the soul of all humanity.

heres another artsy qoute:

Life is short; art is long. (orignaly latin)

Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. Nothing does - except wrinkles. It's true, some wines improve with age. But only if the grapes were good in the first place. - Abigail Van Buren

It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.- Mahatma Gandhi

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.-Mahatma Gandhi

-- The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men. -- by Alice Walker

Isn't it "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth, leaves us all toothless and blind" ?

Either way, indeed a nice quote.

Oh, Oscar Wilde quotes are the best! I did a woodcut print and I called it "We're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." I like all the Oscar Wilde quotes in "Velvet Goldmine", too...

Two I believe I have already quoted somewhere on the boards:

"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it."

George Bernard Shaw

"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it."

George Bernard Shaw

And while I was on that page, I found another good one, for the atheist in me:

"The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact than a drunken man is happier than a sober one."

Not so sophisticated:

A Compromise ? Why? Have I got it wrong?

and:

War is terrorism with a bigger budget

(no offence intended)

Both come from a sceptical youth organisation.

All time favourite:

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

(hope to have no spelling errors in that one)
