Hello everyone!

The other day my dad told me that Cliff Richard (I think ) fasts for one day a week. I don't know why he does it, whether it's for a special diet or something but I was wondering what everyone else thought about this???
Do you think it's healthy to do this? or will it have no effect on him at all? Will it help someone lose weight do you think??? I mean....what benefits on your body will happen if you do fast one day a week??
I've never heard of anyone doing this before....

When I was doing my Kundalini Yoga training, I fasted every Sunday (the day of the training).

So, for a year, I only drank water all day on Sundays.

We were taught that as part of a Spiritual practice, it would be good for us to be clear in this way, and also that it was good for the body to have a "rest" from digestion.

Here's an interesting article on fasting: http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/1834

I sometimes will fast for a day, drinking only water. Not a weekly thing, maybe once every few months. Personally, it just makes me feel - for lack of a better word...clean. I find I have incredible energy when I have my first meal the next day too (I would suggest this meal be a plethora of FRUIT!). It's never affected my body in a negative way, but then again, I haven't done extensive research either. I can't imagine it being harmful if done in moderation. I certainly wouldn't use it as a weight loss tool though.

Thanks! I'm finding this really interesting now! lol Thankyou for the article Ahimsa!

I was also interested in this, as I tend to be an over eater, this may sound weird....but I feel like I 'fear' the hunger feeling...when dinner time aproaches and I havn't eaten anything that day...I get a form of panic on....like if I don't eat something I'll die!! I thought that maybe if I tried fasting for one day a week, I would sort of 'conquor' my hunger fear and I may get over my bad habit of over eating

(Oh, when I said about fasting maybe helping to lose weight...I wasn't implying people should go anorexic lol I was just curious to see if people thought that by fasting for that one day a week, it aided the slimming process )

Oh yes short and very long fasts have helped me to have absolutely no anxiety about missing a meal. It has helped me as a vegan to not worry if I go someplace where there is nothing for me to eat.

Now I'm curious too! I'm not sure that fasting is for me though since if I don't eat much I get dizzy and quite irritable haha! I know I know...consult a doctor before doing anything like fasting...but it seems like a lot of the time they don't know much about it anyway.

I kinda enjoy feeling hungry. Not really sure why...

I kind of know what you mean. I'm doing a "detox" right now...on day 28. Basically I'm just eating REALLY clean. On top of a vegan diet no gluten, processed food, sugar, soy, etc. A lot of the time I feel hungry but I feel a lot lighter and better than I have in while.

Also, I just read that article and it was very informative. Thanks AHIMSA!

I don't enjoy feeling hungry, but I do enjoy feeling empty...if that makes any sense at all...

Totally. I think that's closer to what I meant.

I like feeling like my body's using up what it's got. Like it's working.

Exactly. These are the times that I'm bursting with energy. I should probably eat (or not, rather) like this more regularly, but food tastes good and stuff.. :/

Does anyone know any good sites to learn more about fasting? I'm really interested in learning more.

I don't know any good online resources. I learned from books, and doing it. I went against all the advice, and did unsupervised fasts of fairly long duration, which I don't recommend, unless you have a lot of self confidence and absolutely no anxiety. Fasting is not for everyone.

I sometimes fast for 24hrs on a Sunday while dieting. I weight-train 6 days a week (mon-sat) and also do cardio work as well. I am on a seemingly endless cycle of weight gain/weight loss to achieve the weight I want to be.

Personally I like to fast whilst dieting, I feel it gives me discipline, and I also like the feeling of being "empty". I don't feel it leads to a more rapid weight loss, maybe because the body conserves the energy that it has, while receiving no nutrients, except water of course.

Back in July 2008 I completed a 3 day fast and fully trained for those 3 days, which apparently is not advisable, but I did not feel any ill effects, infact my trainging went pretty much the same in terms of times and energy.

I fast on occasion and it's really beneficial for me. I don't have any set schedule, just when I feel bloated and icky, or start getting the least bit constipated.

Just this past week I put on 5 lbs and was having trouble buttoning my jeans. I went on a 1 day water fast and halfway through the day I was down 3 lbs. I woke up the next morning and was down another. Sorry if this is TMI, but then I took the biggest dump of my life and lost the other lb. I NEEDED a day of cleansing. If I'd kept piling food on top of that, I can't imagine how bad I'd feel.

Now all that said, I don't eat a perfect diet. I'm vegan, but probably eat too much sugar and sodium (ok, there's no "probably" about that, I just do).

If I ate a much healthier diet, I probably wouldn't feel the need, at least not as often.

Right now I probably fast about once a month. I don't think once a week is unreasonable, but definitely not for me.

i don't think it's a bad idea to give your digestive tract a break, if it's just for a day. i think it helps reboot your system. contrast this with days of overeating that people routinely do .

This. I think one day per month is fine.

I usually go half the day without food. I wake up feeling full from the previous day.

Wow, alot more feedback then expected! lol Thanks for all your views! Every one seems to think it's a good thing to do! I'll have to try a day of fasting and see how I do.....I can do half a day and that's usually because I'm busy, not by doing it on purpose! lol I don't have much will power (well I do when it comes to meat, been free from that for over 3 years!! ) and I really really don't like feeling hungry or empty but I feel like I need a cleanse or to change my diet...will let you know when I do it and how I do!! lol
