So I am supposed to fast for 12 hrs for blood work for health insurance. I don't know that I can without my blood sugar dropping too low. Does anyone know how much it will mess things up if I don't fast? Twelve hours seems excessive. I could probably do 6 or 8 if I spend that time sleeping. Triglycerides, cholesterol and blood sugar is all they are checking. Can't find a thing on line about it of course. Or maybe I'm just not using the right words to search.

I've done it and I have blood sugar issues. The key is to go after waking up and bring a snack for after. Do you have a blood sugar condition?

People actually get to sleep 8-9 hours? Damn, I am jealous.

I am just going to go when I get up. It might be 10 hours instead of 12 or something, but I doubt my values will set off any red flags for the insurance company. It's at the lab (work pays for it) so no waiting around for some doctor to take his time while my blood sugar drops.

I don't know if I have true hypoglycemia or not. If I pay attention to eating properly, I can sometimes go 4-5 hours without a problem. I have never tried 12.

an interesting tid bit I just learned in my nutrition course work....very few people have true clinical hypoglycemia. Everyone will experience symptoms of low blood sugar if they go long enough without food, but some people are more sensitive to the time frame than others, but it's a natural reaction, and it again doesn't mean you have "clinical" hypoglycemia, yet people throw that diagnosis out frequently....

good suggestion above, to go and get it done, and then eat a hearty bkft or healthy snack to keep you going!

Ditto to those saying to go asap in the morning. If nothing else, way easier to keep your mind off food when you're asleep.

I've had to do this, and it really wasn't a problem. Have your dinner at a normal dinnertime, like 7ish, and then just don't eat anything else before you go to bed. Make your appointment for 9 in the morning and have breakfast after. 12 hours isn't that much time to not be eating if it's overnight.

^^^ That's 14 hours. That would never work. Anyway, I made it 10 hours. They didn't seem to care I was 2 hours short. I could never do 12. I must be defective.

I started getting hot while waiting which is the first sign my blood sugar is going to drop. But I got called back before that happened. I had pop in my car for immediately afterwards, then I met friends for lunch. I didn't do anything strenuous beforehand either. Got up, found some clothes, let the dogs out and went to the lab. I still think 12 hours is insane.

If I wake up in the morning and don't eat, I can generally go 18-24 hrs before I start feeling like I need to eat. If my stomach is acting up, I can go 24-36 hrs easily. I usually have at least a 12 hrs period every day without food. I had dinner at 5 tonight and I probably won't eat anything until tomorrow... If I get up in the morning and eat though, then I have to eat throughout the day to keep my blood sugar up. After I sleep though it doesn't drop again until I eat and the food digests, or a LONG time has elapsed.

We lucky few, eh? Nice to have the option to put off eating. Those damn biological imperatives! *shakes fist*

I'd like to trade places with either of you. I have friends like that too and I am envious of them. I love to eat but it can be a pain to have sudden drops in blood sugar if I don't do things just right. I can't eat first thing in the morning but once I'm up a little while I am suddenly starving.

Glad it went okay and you didn't pass out sprawling in the doc's office.
