This is just horrible and unbelievable ... I hope this is the forum to submit such material.. If not please forgive me.<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two California poultry farmers who fed some 30,000 live chickens into wood chippers will not face criminal charges because they had permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (news - web sites), prosecutors said on Friday.<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>
But a spokesman for the Humane Society of the United States called the farmers "callous and barbaric" and disagreed with the decision not to prosecute them.<br><br><br><br><br><br>
The farmers needed to destroy the chickens because they were "spent" -- or no longer able to produce eggs -- and could not make chicken soup out of them because the farms were under quarantine for the poultry virus Exotic Newcastle Disease, District Attorney's spokeswoman Gayle Stewart said.<br><br><br><br><br><br>
Stewart said the men, who run a poultry farm near San Diego, asked a senior veterinarian with the Agriculture Department if they could employ the wood chippers and were given permission.<br><br><br><br><br><br>
"Once they had permission we decided that they did not have any criminal intent," Stewart said.<br><br><br><br><br><br>
Brothers Arie and Will Wilgenburg, who run Escondido-based Ward Poultry Farm, could not be reached for comment on Friday. Earlier, they told the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper that they were doing "what we thought we had to do" based on expert advice and stopped as soon as they learned otherwise.<br><br><br><br><br><br>
Wayne Pacelle, a spokesman for the Humane Society, said that explanation was unacceptable.<br><br><br><br><br><br>
"The act of feeding live chickens into a wood chipper is an extraordinarily callous and barbaric act and I can't imagine any person with a whit of common sense would use a wood chipper as a killing tool," he said. "No person with any experience in killing animals would sanction the use of this technique."<br><br><br><br><br><br>
Pacelle said the District Attorney's decision not to prosecute the brothers rested on the "faulty assumption" that using wood chippers to kill chickens was an accepted practice.<br><br><br><br><br><br><a href="http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=573&ncid=757&e=1&u=/nm/20030414/od_nm/odd_chickens_dc" target="_blank">http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...dd_chickens_dc</a>

I was just going to post the same article here. They said is in an "accepted practice." Accepted by who? Certainly not the chickens or us!! What a horrendous murderous thing to do and even worse they were alive when they did it. I can imagine the horror the chickens felt even before the physical pain. This is one of the most inhumane things I've ever read. If I write any more it will be swear words so I will stop here....

Unbelievable that some people can be so devoid of any scrap of humane (maybe that word should be changed as it contains the word human and sometimes I really wonder if that's appropriate!) mentality.<br><br><br><br>
What's as hard to fathome is some of the pathetic responses on the yahoo messages at the bottom of that story ... but then again those boards seem to collect the worst of humanity on any news issue. I wouldn't suggest reading any and I stopped after a couple <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":(">

You wouldn't belive how many chickens they are killing right now in California. My dad is a dozer operator on wildfires during the summer so he is friends with a lot of the CDF people and he said that they are sending them (the CDF) down south in shift to differnt places to kill chickens because of this Newcastle disease that is spreading pretty bad. I am not sure exactly how they do it, but I think that they break their necks or something like that, still not nice, but to me that is better than a woodchipper. If you don't know what Newcastle disease is it is a fatal viral infection that infects birds ...the last time that the disease broke out in California was in the 70's and then they ended up killing some 12 million chickens....this is a really really sad thing, and I wish that they could find some kind of cure for it, but it seems like people arn't as worried about animal disease cures as much as humans because they feel that animals can be "replaced".

I don't believe that....<br><br><br><br>
I know that when the (1 day) chicken are sexed they go in to the schredder. I hadn't heard of this on full-size chickens.

It's things like like this that really piss me off and wonder why I never noticed all of these things happening around me sooner. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/mad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="">

This is so horrible. How can they have this as an "accepted practice". I can't wait till I can leave home because then I'm gonna go and try to stop this. I could do some stuff now but can a 13 year old be trialed as an adult?

Michael_veggie, the only thing that works in the long run is making the general public aware of how the industry treats animals for their cheap eggs/meat and so on.<br><br><br><br>
You cannot be trailed as an adult, but there would be (severe) consequenses for you.
