Saw this thread on another board and thought it was interesting. Any famous people from your high school or college?

Probably the most famous would be Jim Thome (baseball player) from my high school.

I really wanted to apply there... But it's much too far away from home.

I seem to remember reading Beth Orton went to my college. But it was in one of those 'our college is so great' presentations they had up for an open day and who really believes those?

If they were going to make someone up I'm not sure why they'd choose Beth Orton.

There was some Motocross biker who quit his celebrity job and decided to go to seminary at my college to become a pastor. Darn, I can't remember his name right now. I think his first name was Tom. He was in my pocket billiards class, which believe it or not did give half a credit toward the PE requirements.

I didn't know he was anything other than a run-of-the-mill student who started his degree later than age 18, and then my biology project partner told me her brother has posters of this guy all over his bedroom. It was... unique.

He was a really sweet guy. I thought so before I found out he's widely known. I remember having several conversations in the library foyer that continued out into the parking lot. The longest conversation lasted 45 minutes. I don't know if he knew I knew who he was WRT to Motocross, and he didn't seem to want to talk about it. I asked some questions that were wide open that he could have mentioned Motocross, but he didn't. That's up to him. If he's tired of being known as "that celebrity," then he can create a new identity based on something a bit more lasting.

It just occurred to me that since Tom and I were in the same pocket billiards class, one of the things we talked about was Fiddlesticks, this pool club not to far from the college. He'd started going there on weekend evenings. I'd never been, but at that point, I was working every evening I didn't have student newspaper staff meetings, so I could never go. Looking back on it, I'm not sure if he just mentioned it as a fun thing to do or if he was asking me out in a way that went right over my head.

Oh well, live and learn. Since his first semester was Spring 2004, he's probably still there, working on his Bible & Theology degree.

Because she's the only semi famous person to come from the same city? And saying 'Delia Smith went here', doesnt really have much interest to 16-19 year olds. Though hmmm with peoples taste in music these days, neither does 'Beth Orton went here'.

Ooh and another college claim to fame my media tutor also taught Hannah Spirit of S Club 7 fame (did they ever make the U.S?)

Hm. There aren't too many of whom I'm aware. Two that come quickly to mind are this guy, who's moderately talented, but unfortunately lacking many other redeeming qualities, and Andy Van Hekken, famous for throwing a shutout in his MLB pitching debut.

My housemate went to school with Cate Blanchett. I didn't go to school with anyone of any international fame, but my first highschool had some of freak of nature model:normal people ratio.

Or rather, same school as her, Cate's a fair bit older so she didn't know her or anything.

I remember when she won her Oscar and her school drama teacher was on the radio. Imagine being the high school drama teacher of an Oscar winner!

According to the wikipedia page for my high school:

Tony Fisher NFL

Running Back for the St. Louis Rams; winner of the 1997 Mr. Football Award.

Robert Smith - Former NFL Running Back for the Minnesota Vikings; ESPN Analyst; winner of the 1988 & 1989 Mr. Football Award.

Chris Harrell - NFL Safety for the Arizona Cardinals.

I'm not surprised they are all football players, we generally have a good team.

I knew about Robert Smith, he went there while I was there. I also remember in our famous alumni showcase there was a picture of some actor from the Police Academy Movies. Very inspiring.

Here are some people at my college when I was there: William Upski,

Josh Ritter, (nice and funny guy) and Ed Helms of the Daily Show. (ugh, I had no idea about Ed Helms, he was a year ahead of me. I HATE reading my alumni mag, "This month: everyone you graduated with is rich and famous, what's wrong with you?")

Jerry of Ben and Jerry's dropped out, Liz Phair didn't nor did a bunch of other counter cultural types.
