ok so do you use fake meat, and if so, why?

i know this has been discussed before, but i have never read any of it. i have been using fake meats lately but basically only to please DH. i have no desire for it, but if he puts the veggie ground in the burritos, i don't balk at it either. i just don't *desire* it, because i don't miss meat. but i have noticed that i only eat the fake meats when the rest of my family does. i just wonder if people use it to satisfy meat cravings, or if they just use it for "filler".

am i making any sense?

I use them on occasion because I like the taste, no more or less. They are a nice contrast of flavour and texture compared to my usual affair.

I'm not massively fond of them, I used them much more when I was LO-veggie, because I wasn't really thinking of new recipies, just changing the old ones, which needed meat substitutes. Now I'll have veg mince occasionally, but that's about it.

i like the taste of some of them, but i dont eat them because of a craving for the taste of meat.its more the opposite for me.if i buy a veggie product that tastes like meat,i will not eat it because the taste sickens me.

I eat TVP pretty regularly which I guess is like imitation ground beef, because I like that it's cheap, convenient, versatile and easy. IT adds a lot of bulk and protein to foods and tastes good in just about any sauce or dish. I also eat imitation chicken patties on occasion and veggie burgers (although I prefer the veggie burgers where you can taste the actual veggies rather than the ones made to taste like meat).

The main "fake meats" I use are the veggie sausages/hotdogs. That is very occassionally, I mostly use lentils or beans as my fillers/protein. Cheaper and healthier. I buy them dry, not canned.

I mainly use Boca Burgers (usually cut up)-- not becasue I crave meat, but because it is high in protien, and something different to add to food. I like the fake riblet-- I think it is morningstar farm becasue it makes a great BBQ sandwich. I find I miss the flavor of the sauces, BBQ, catsup/ mustard for burgers, teriaki etc., more than the actual meat-- the fake meats really dont taste like meat anyway. They are more like spongey soy-filler with some sort of vegamite in them.

I use Boca Burgers and Smart Life deli "meats" quite often. The omnis in the family don't object to those, although we've not liked the Yves brands too well.

I used to eat nothing but meat because my whole family is like that. I chose to go vegan cold tofurky and I used fake meats to help myself in the transition. Now I just eat tofu as a filler and forget about the fake meats.

I have to admit, I am very fond of the Morningstar farms prime grillers and my whole family likes TVP in chili and spag sauce. I also like the sausage patties on occasion. I still use eggs on occasion but otherwise like beans as my primary protien. I had to eat out with a group all week this week for a class. They loved a local chinese place which really saved my butt! BTW, if you haven't had Broccoli in Garlic Suace, you should! I also recently did the veggie lover at Pizza hut, delicious!

I tend to use them more in the summer when going to BBQs, picnics, camping, etc. The notdogs and veggie burgers fit in with the omni's plans and don't attract so much attention. We're also really busy and these make quick and easy convenience meals sometimes.

The only thing I use regularly the rest of the year are the "bacon" strips. That was my favorite meat and it turns out that I like the replacement even more -- good flavor and less grease.

i myself have only tried one brand of veg burger when i was lacto ovo, and that was a Boca Burger, which i found fouly repulsive. I now have a pack of "vegan grillers" Morningstar brand in my freezer waiting to be had sometime for dinner, hoping they're better than the last ones i had. Also, i have NOT tried any faux chicken meat, but i ahve heard from OMNIS(! i know, surprise!) that the Chik'n Strips from Morningstar are superb, so those might be acceptable! Otherwise, not a huge faux meat fan, cuz i've never really liked red meat (beef, bacon, ham, pork, hamburgers, etc.) much anyways.

I use TVP for sloppy joes a lot. Other than that I don't cook with fake meats much, I mostly just eat it when I am eating with my family, or eating out somewhere with limited options like BBQs or restaurants. I rarely crave meat but when I do I usually want chicken, but there aren't any good substitutes for it.

Before I became vegan, I used to use fake meat quite a bit, for texture and protein more than for taste, but I don't use them anymore because 99% of them have wheat, which I can't eat (I'm also gluten-intolerant). I don't really miss the fake meat, although I did run out of tofu this week and really wanted to pull a few slices of tofurky out of the fridge!! My boyfriend is L/O and he eats fake meats a lot.

This July 4th we're having a BBQ (I love it when the vegetarians have the BBQ!) and I found some vegan, gluten-free burgers that I'm going to try. But other than that, I'm really happy with tofu and tempeh.
