not quite sure what powerline networking is. But for brand recommendations I can say that I bought a NetGear router once for my first router and it was crap and a pain(many friends have had the same experience with NetGear) and I went and bought a Linksys and it is so wonderful and easy. I won't buy NetGear again.
I think powerline networking is done using the outlets in your home (or is that called something else)? If you're going to try that, be sure to buy from a place with a good return policy. You may find out your house wiring is less than perfect.
