Well, this is truly depressing. Bridget Bardot has fallen off the deep end. What the heck is wrong with her? I'm very disappointed and have lost respect for her. This isn't her first offense. I used to admire her for what I knew to be a fierce dedication to animal welfare (although her eccentricity didn't help, unfortunately.)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/france/sto...956179,00.html

While I personally believe Ms. Bardot is a bit of nutcase (and always have thought that way about her), and certainly I do not agree with damn near anything she has ever said, or currently says, I find myself ironically posting here in her defense.

Does she not have a right to state her opinion? It is, after all, her opinions that are a target here. We may not agree with her, and think she has "fallen off the deep end"... but I still think she has a right to express her opinion, however wrong it may be.

I would certainly feel different if she were advocating the commission of violence or criminal acts ((ie, inciting a riot or advocating gay bashing, etc), but she is stating her opinions only from what I understand.

Having said that, I am not sure on free speech freedoms afforded the French under their laws, so perhaps it is against some law there. But if it were against the law in, say, the USA.... wouldn't people like Eminem be the target of lawsuits from the Gay community for basically the same thing?

Robbie, dear, do I not have the right to have no respect for her? Yes! I did not say nor imply that she shouldn't say how she really feels; to the contrary, I'm glad she has. This makes it crystal clear to me where she's coming from. Racists, bigots and their ilk will *never* have my respect. They have the right to be whatever they want to be, but she is beyond irresponsible for these remarks, knowing she is looked to and touts herself as a woman of compassion and fighting for rights of animals. She finds animals worthy of rights and compassion but not all humans? Silly. I would find her incredible. Would you want to listen to her rattle on about the plight of animals, knowing she's racist? She feeds into the stereotype and worse.

She also has become a detriment to those of us who constantly have to defend our state of mind to the majority who like to lump us into Ms. Bardot's looney bin before we will even be afforded a voice.

Regarding France's freedoms of speech, she has been convicted and fined for similar statements in the past. I found this article which references those: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/793390.stm

Similarly, Trent Lott (U.S.) made racist statements, and it wasn't the first time. Frankly, I find racist comments labeled "mistakes" or "slip ups" not very convincing; however, most Americans believe in second chances. Like Lott, Ms. Bardot has a history of this behavior (more than their share of second chances), and I find that unacceptable.

(I'm not comparing a public official's responsibility with a private citizen/celebrity's cause; just using the public statements of these people and how they effect/affect their causes, jobs, etc. They're in different countries as well. )

So stop defending her! You just like her in a bikini

Strix: actually, I totally agree with you that you also have a right to have no respect for her. I have had absolutely zero respect for her for as long as I can remember... so this is nothing new to me

I just found it ironic that I felt the need to actually post in her defense considering my lack of respect for her. Oh, as for aging "sex symbols in bikinis"... it's Raquel Welch for me all the way baby
