Hey everyone. Recently I've been REALLY getting into ethnic cooking and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good cookbooks that are vegan, have some vegan recipes in them, or are easily veganizable? I'm not talking about like Chinese, Mexican, Indian...etc. I'm talking more obscure. Like maybe cookbook regions like I have a cookbook called A Taste of Africa (it's not vegan but I got it for 5 bux used) and it's good but most recipes have meat in them and they're hard to veganize. I'm looking for ethnic cookbooks/recipes from places that are not commonly eaten in the US like maybe African food, South American/Central America, Carribean, Asian (minus Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian), some European foods like Eastern/Slavic...etc. Basically ethnic foods you don't see a lot of in the US (at least I don't see a lot of). The common ones I think of are like India, Thai, Japanese, Italian, French, Mexican...etc. They're all good but I won't MORE! I have some ethnic cookbooks but they aren't vegan and it is fun trying to veganize the recipes but would like more books that are geared towards ethnic foods.

Ethiopian is one of my favorites btw. Thanks everyone!

There's a whole series of the "A Vegan Taste of ...." cookbooks, if you do a search on Amazon, but most of them don't have very good reviews.

The Asian Vegan Kitchen is fantastic - the recipes are meant to be very authentic, they're certainly much better the majority of cook books out there. It covers 9 countries including chinese, indian, japanese, thai, indonesian, korean, mayalsian and I can't remember the other two off the top of my head. Although I have about 6 indian cookbooks, the indian recipes in this one are far far superior. The others I have little to compare to but they're all fantastic and with beautiful flavours. Can you tell I'm a fan?

Try any of Donna Klein's ethnic cookbooks. I think she has Italian, Mediterranean, and Tropical? They're vegan, but generally not veganized (like woo! fake meat and cheese) recipes, but ethnic recipes that are vegan, or close, in their original form. She uses a lot of easy to find ingredients and most of the recipes are pretty easy to put together.

A few I own:

Vegan Deli - Jo Stepianik - mostly Eastern European/Jewish
The Ethnic Vegetarian - Angela Medearis - African Carribean, Southern US (I like this one quite a bit. Vegetarian but mostly veganizable)
Viva Vegan! - Terry Romero - Latin, with lots of stuff from non-Mexico countries along with the Mexican stuff
The World in Your Kitchen - Troth Wells - vegetarian African, Asian, Latin
Silk Road Cooking - vegetarian, the Middle Eastern and Tibetan stuff is most interesting

I wouldn't recommend Delicious Jamaica unless you have access to a Jamaican grocery or something

The best resource on Ethiopean is probably this piece from VT: which is no longer online April 1991 p. 22 though

Dakshin: Vegetarian Cuisine from South India. Not 100% vegan but AMAZING and easily veganized. One of my FAVORITE cookbooks, by far. If you need any help veganizing things (I know you're really savvy though ) let me know, as I have this.

http://www.amazon.com/Dakshin-Vegeta.../dp/9625935274
