Go Emily!!! She's been vegan for 20 yrs! She is one celebrity who I don't ever see reverting back to being an omni or munching on some cheese or sushi.

That's great! Not likely to be a Natalie Portman repeat.

I don't like Ms. Deschanel's show, but I like her.

Also, like her, I will not change my diet due to pregnancy. Well, that's not true, I'll quit drinking.

She's amazing. I have never seen her show, but every time I've read something about her I've been impressed. Zooey is vegan (and gluten and soy free!) too, but she doesn't seem to be as vocal about it, which is a shame considering she's the more famous sibling. We need classy, balanced celebrities to vouch for veganism more often!

Lol i was thinking about Zooey at first then realized it was 'Temperance', well i didn't know she was pregnant IRL, explains why it's in the show. Oh and i don't think Zooey is the more famous one, because a lot of people watch bones, i always thought of Zooey as the girl from Elf or the girl from 'this and that', until i realized she is Emily's sister, i love both of them, they are so unique and seem fun, and have unique beauty as well.

That's awesome. I did not even knew who she was before opening this thread and now I am one of her biggest fans.

FWIW, Zooey's not been vegan for maybe a couple of years now. She said she was having a hard time getting enough calories because of the soy/gluten intolerances too.

I was just reading that Emily was one of the cover celebs for some mainstream magazine (Redbook or something), and she talked about keeping her vegan diet during pregnancy there, as well. Nice to see some people sticking to their guns even if it might be a bit hard.

Like IamJen said, Zooey isn't vegan anymore. She isn't even vegetarian because she eats meat now.

No wonder she doesn't talk about it then! Shame, I like her quite a bit, so this is really disappointing news.

I like the Deschanel sisters, and this thread inspired me to look up Zooey and her diet. I still like her, but I have to say I wish she were still at least vegetarian. I have food allergies and it's tough, but not impossible.

Still, I found this blog post written back when she was vegan. The author is an absolute idiot about vegan nutrition. The entire post could go verbatim into the "Stupid Things Omnivores Say" thread. http://ifitandhealthy.com/zooey-deschanel-diet/

This comment was the kicker for me:

Quote:

most vegans I have seen look as if they were seating in a deep cave without sunlight for at least months. Deschanel is an exception; she does not look that way at all, which makes me wonder if she sneaks into her diet the Quarter Pounder with cheese every now and then.

Thankfully the commenters ripped apart the idiocy.

There was also an episode of Top Chef on which Zooey appeared. The contestants had to cook for her, and when she informed them that she was vegan, you should have seen their faces...it was like she told them she only eats dirt and rocks. When she went on to say that she was gluten and soy intolerant, the chefs looked like they'd just been punched in the stomach. I'll see if I can find a link to the video.

I just remember thinking, gee...I can think of a ton of delicious things to make that fit that description, and I'm not even a chef.

Yes. But I'm not going to drink while the woman I impregnated doesn't get to.

That Top Chef episode annoyed me but not because of the chefs (I think some of them did a fairly decent job in the end) but because of her. She came across as flaky and uneducated regarding veganism and her allergies. She mentioned how all she usually ate was salad and steamed vegetables. She was amazed by some of the meals and had no clue some of the ingredients even existed or that she could eat them. I felt that she displayed the stereotype that all vegans can eat is lettuce.

So it didn't surprise me all that much when she went back to eating meat even though the chefs proved to her that it is possible to eat delicious and nutritious meals despite all of her allergies. It seems like she just didn't want to put in the effort and time to research how to eat and remain healthy, although she could have easily hired someone to do that and she could have also hired a personal chef to cook right for her.

That's very nice. Your post made it sound like it would be your own body's pregnancy, so I was confused.

I actually didn't see that episode past the beginning so I didn't know that. That is really frustrating Especially being a celebrity! I'd totally hire someone to cook for me all the time if I had those kind of resources. I'd just tell them to keep all things I don't/can't eat out of the kitchen. Problem solved.
