Hello, my name's Rosina and I've been vegetarian for about two years now. I've eliminated milk from my diet, but not milk products. I'm 15 years old, with a couple of parents who are full on meat-eaters. My brother, 21, is a vegan and eventually I realized that just because my mom eats meat doesn't mean I have to. Ever since I could remember I remember feeling bad about it, but ate meat anyways because my parents told me it was good for me. Only alter did I realize they were just being your usual biased meat-eater.

So I switched! I hate the taste of plain milk, always have. So yesterday, I decided to kill that off too! I love soymilk, and have been drinking it for a long time. Chocolate Silk is my favorite.

I love fruit. I've eaten three white peaches today..

I still eat rennet, even though I know where it comes from. Cheese serves as one of my main sources of protein, so until I quit cooking from pasta boxes, I can't eliminate rennet just yet. I do feel guilty whenever I eat it though.

I do not eat fish, I am not pesketarian.

Hunting is a sick and vile sport, I wish it to be banned completely. Wasn't it enough to shove cows in boxes, feed them supplements and 'grow' them, then put them in a processor?

I love cougars, they're one of my favorite animals.

I love final fantasy. Sephiroth is my hero.

I don't get enough protein currently, so I'm a little bit underweight. I'm working on it though, and once I introduce more soymilk, I should be getting more of it.

I need to learn to cook. Not pasta roni (though that stuff is soooo good x.x).

Hello Rosina, and welcome to VB!! Whole grains, beans and nuts are a very good source of protein, so you don't have to depend on cheese for that. If you search the boards, you'll find a lot of information on protein and ways to get enough (we don't need that much, anyway). Feel free to ask anything!
I don't meant to sound like I'm making excuses, but the thing about other sources of protein is preparation methods are harder for me :[ I'm not a very good cook, and burritos get old after a while. Like I said though, I should be able to free myself from the rennet curse very soon, after I stock up on Silk <3

Does cheese culture contain rennet?
Cheese can be made with animal derived or vegetarian rennet. The kind used is usually printed on the package (with the ingredients).

Well, raw nuts or peanut butter don't need much preparation, and you could get canned or frozen beans to begin with. Beans can be quite versatile, you don't need to have them in a burrito. And you can have whole grains without too much hassle: just replace pasta with wholegrain pasta, breakfast cereal with musli or some other wholegrain cereal, and white rice with brown rice, quinoa or buckwheat. Have a browse in the recipe section here for ideas.
Hi Rosina

Well , just take it easy and work slowly through to your goals . Most find it best to go slow and build up the nutritional side of things as they go . Other wise you do end up with the weight / nutritional problems

There is a good recipe section
, maybe you could pick a few out , Ask your mum you want to "learn to cook " show her some , and go from there .

Cheese comes with both animal and vegetable rennet < (thats the type I use) . Its written on the ingredients on the sticker . Not certain which country you are from , but veggie rennet base cheese is common down under in NZ.

There is a very active teen board you might want to check out

Whenever I read the ingredients of cheese, it almost always just says 'rennet' with nothing else. I could look around on the package for something, but I think I already have and found nothing. Eh well, I'll try again.

My mother does not agree with me on Vegetarianism and believes that 'animals were put here for our consumption.' Of course I always reply with 'Then let's consume Cassie
(our cat)' She is a doctor, and extremely busy. She probably would teach me to cook but she has no time on her hands and when she does, she spends it with her McBrainwashed husband, my stepdad.

I'm going to try though, I swear! It's also a matter of going to the store, since a lot of times my parents buy me things I'd rather not eat, like diet cereal bars >_> They like to go to the store without me so I don't beg them for 'some gross food for teenagers'.

I make a lot of things with beans, but it really is a matter of ingredients, since I adore cold sandwiches rather than hot dishes for lunch <3

Thanks for the suggestions <3

Thanks Amy!

Oh! I just fully read the package of my favorite pepper jack cheese I put in EVERYTHING, and it said 'contains no animal rennet' 8D!!!!

But the cheddar cheese just says 'cultured milk, salt, annato, enzymes, bladdyblah' and nothing about rennet :[

Thats cool about the pepper jack , just e/mail the cheddar cheese company .I think you will find it is animal but they might have a cheddar range that is veggie rennet
I know it sucks being a teenager and not being able to get what you need for your veg diet. Is there any chance you can get on a bus and go to the grocery store by yourself for a few things? Or tell your mother that veg food isn't gross, because it's stuff everybody eats, like beans and peanut butter?

The sad part of it is, your mother's a doctor, and she isn't open-minded enough to consider a veg diet a healthy diet.
From what you say, I get some idea of what she probably tells her patients who say they want to go veg...

Actually, few of my mother's patients (to my knowledge) are converting to vegetarianism, mainly because most of them are senior women who would rather complain about muscle aches than quit eating meat. Besides, nearly all of her patients are conservative yuppies anyway >_> But you are right, it is a bit sad how close-minded she is about it. My mother hates giving me money for groceries, I can't get a job, and I hate the buses around here. I've ridden them before, but creepy people ride them >_>;;;

Really it's just getting my mother to take me to the store that's the main problem x.x

I'll email the cheddar cheese company, but it doesn't really matter since I don't eat that stuff much anyway, if at all.

If I may make a suggestion, you could always make bean dips/spreads to use on sandwiches, like hummus. That's what I do. A few days ago I made an aduki bean dip which I ate mainly on sandwiches.
Good suggestion. I do try to use dips and spreads, but at the moment (this is why I signed up here mainly, for the recipes) I'm not very good at making them in the first place.

Also, though tasty, dips and spreads only go so far with a bit of brown, icky, iceberg lettuce and MAYBE a tomato. My mother seems to think if she buys me alfalfa sprouts (love those) and spinache and (GOD FORBID) romaine lettuce that I won't eat them.

Wraps are also one of my favorite foods for lunch..
Its a bit of a long shot ....but a while back there was a teen that was going through much the same situation as you . Another member suggested that she go on line to the supermarket and get her order pre made up (the teen had to look after a brother and couldn't get to the supermarket ) . So that all the mother had to do was to pay and pick up a box of veggie goodies . The teen was going to give it a go .

Its only a suggestion , I don't know how receptive your mother would be . You might have to make some deal about not ordering all the junk food you like ...LOL

Seems like sooner or later you are going to have to learn to cook your self .
My mother refuses to shop online, whether or not it's my money XD

I gave a talk to her yesterday about dropping milk and somehow she went on this long rant on how even if we aren't supposed to be drinking and eating dairy, it's still the best and cheapest way to get calcium and blah blah blah.

But hopefully I can convince her to show me how to make this yummy looking stroganoff recipe I found yesterday <3

A bit off topic, but I love going to the store. You learn so much about yourself and other people when you peek into a few shopping carts XD! The fat kids all have twinkies, various sweet cereals, lotsa meat, and soda. And you look at our cart and it's filled with earth balance (love that stuff), soy milk, lots of fruits, mushrooms, coffee, and SoBe (I love that crud, I don't know why XD).

Funny when you compare your food choices with other people, especially when they come whining to my mother about how '"they can't lose weight even though they've tried everything".
