I have finished reading my first book about the vegetarian/vegan diet & the horrors of what takes place to get meat & eggs to the public

I have read about the appalling conditions & treatment of laying hens & I've learned that the terms "cage free" & "free range" don't really match with the picture I have always had in my mind of happy chickens scampering around the farm experiencing the joys of life

I have not read anything regarding the treatment of cows related to the purpose of providing the public with butter, cheese, & milk. Is there a book (or website perhaps) where this is discussed? I'm hoping to find out that the cows are not abused for this purpose in any way resembling the way chickens are abused for their eggs.

Sorry to say, but the dairy industry isn't any better, plus the outcome is the same, the cow ends up being sent to the slaughterhouse. This is a good link to start:

http://www.veganoutreach.org/dairy/index.html

Thank you very much for the info & link. I was hoping they had better treatment but I see that even if they are raised with a lot of love & joy in their lives, they end up in the hands of a "third party" anyway & I'm sure I know what happens after that

The UK charity Viva has a very informative website: http://milkmyths.org.uk/ which also looks at the nutritional side of dairy.
