I just saw it in the store. For months due to a crop failure in Mexico, eggplant has been MIA here and in much of North America. It's made it impossible for me to make some of my favorite dishes. Here's what I'm making tomorrow:

I just recently saw it back in stores here in Oklahoma too. I didn't know about the crop failure, but I'm definitely glad eggplant is back!

i also didn't know it was from a crop failure, which is why it's $2.99 a pound in the stores. WM was always out, but Hannaford's had them pretty routinely.

Jealous! I found about a dozen teeny-tiny eggplants at my grocery store a few weeks ago, and they were sublime! No luck since then, though. Maybe tonight!!

wow. i didn't know about the crop failure. i'm in california, looked for eggplant a month ago at 5+ different markets, they didn't have them AT ALL... now they are 3lbs for a dollar at the middle eastern market nearby... therefore, aaah, finally!! ... i can make thai red curry with eggplant..

Eggplant could disappear completely for what I care anyhow.

The plate is looking good.


I think I saw it around a month ago here (SoCal) but it was a tad expensive. I thought the reason was that it was off season. Going to try to grow my own Japanese eggplants this year (luckily it's easy to tend and pretty drought tolerant) so I could always them throughout the summer.

I didn't know that either, but eggplant is one of the things i rarely eat out of season so i haven't missed it.

+1. It's way too expensive out of season.
I haven't bothered looking for it for months now since I know the price is always outrageous.

I am going to try growing some. I have only had eggplant parm and fritters so I need to find more good recipes and how to prepare it good.

I like to bake it w/ olive oil on top and roast some tomatoes and red peppers in the oven @ the same time and make a sandwich.

yea i hadn't been able to find it for like 2 months, figured there was some type of supply issue.
