I think they taste good just by themselves. My wife likes them more than I do, we've gone through a whole bag before, just munching on them. But we'll put them in containers and take them with us sometimes, or just eat as a snack at work or at home.
We don't put anything on them, and we've gotten the kind in the store already void of the pod. Mostly we buy them at the farmer's market here in the summer (they're still in the pod).
We just steam them till they're just soft enough to eat, but slightly firm. Or if they're in the pod, just till they come out easily from the pod.
Yeah, like OregonAmy said. I'm sure there's lots of toppings too as she said with the salt and pepper. I prefer them without anything, but that's me. Or in salads or stir-frys, etc.
I steam all my veggies though, I dislike boiling them, since it takes away nutrients. Unless there's a reason no one has told me that boiling is better for some things (say to remove some toxic thing).
