Why wait in line when you can just eat a cockroach? That's the question Six Flags Great America is asking its thrill seekers during its Halloween-themed FrightFest. The amusement park is daring customers to eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach in exchange for unlimited line-jumping privileges.

The promotion, which has Lake County Health Department officials shaking their heads, starts Oct. 7.

Anyone who chows down the entire 2- to 3-inch horned cockroach gets a pass for four people to cut to the front of ride lines through Oct. 29.

This is horrible. What a great way to encourage disrespect toward animals amongst children.

The last time I went to six flags the longest I had to wait in line was 5 minutes... o_O" Unless Fright Fest is unbearably busy, it's kind of stupid.

Either way, it's gross and cruel.

If enough people eat the roaches, the non-roach-eating lines will be shorter. Thus, the joke's on them.

Yeah, when I went a couple weeks ago the lines were really short. I wouldn't have eaten a piece of bread to skip to the front of the line.

I have to give them credit, it was a good way to generate buzz.

I think the people who eat the cockroaches get to move ahead of everyone in the non-eating line, no matter what.

yeah, but if a whole bunch of people wanna eat roaches to get ahead of the queue, and there is only one guy handing out and supervising roach eating, the other wannabe roach eaters will need to form some kind of line, to wait for, and eat a roach.

if there are enough roach eaters in a queue waiting for their roach, the non roach eaters queue might end up being much faster- what with all the cringing and gagging and time involved in handing out and swallowing roaches, slowing down the roach queue.

PETA upset at Six Flags roach contest

[People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Six Flags Great America to scrap its Halloween-themed cockroach-eating promotion.

A spokeswoman for the animal rights organization says the contest at the amusement park's FrightFest is "gratuitously cruel."

The park in Gurnee, is joining other Six Flags parks in offering unlimited line-jumping privileges to anyone who eats a live Madagascar hissing cockroach. The bugs are up to three inches long.

The contest begins next month.

Amusement park officials are defending their menu choice. Great America spokesman Jim Taylor says the bugs are nutritious, high in protein and fat free.
