Driving home from watching the Haye vs Klitschko last night, a car in front of me was driving somewhat erratically, so, as you would, I backed off even more.

He bounced off the kerb and veered over the road, causing me to have to brake and swerve, too. The car behind me had to do the same thing and actually ended up sideways across the street. It ended with the car in front of me and behind me at 90 degrees to how they should be travelling.

Both the guy behind me and I got out and asked each other if we were ok - clearly, we were - so we went to the chap in front. He had just started getting out of his car and seemed lucid and "with it".

He then admitted, "I've only had two gins and a beer" and that he was fine to drive.

Yeah. Clearly.

The guy that swerved behind me was all for dragging him into a dark alley and kicking seven shades out of him and, if truth be known, so was I, but those kinds of days are WELL behind me now!

Thankfully, with it being well after midnight, traffic was almost non-existent. After moving the car onto a side-street, I suggested to the the guy behind me to take the keys out of the ignition. He agreed and actually put them in his pocket and told the drunk driver to go to the local police station to get them back in the morning. The drunk driver got very animated at this calling us both all the names under the sun and how we were "the alcohol police" and such. I just pointed out that I didn't much fancy being in a car crash because some selfish arsehole wanted to drink and drive.

The other guy and I both got back in our cars and drove off, leaving the drunk guy sitting on the kerb crying!

OK, sure, he wasn't absolutely wasted and perhaps he *DID* only have three drinks. But that's three drinks more than he should have had if he wanted to drive home.

Because of one selfish moron, I was nearly involved in a crash that could have resulted in me becoming hurt. Or worse.

I've already posted on a thread on here before about drunk driving and my policy of absolute zero, but I never thought I'd be in a situation like this.

How selfish must you be to do that? Really? How slow-of-mind and utterly moronic must you be to think that having alcohol in your blood doesn't affect your ability to do things like DRIVE A CAR.

I realise that this is a duplicate thread in addition the the Jackass guy killing himself, but I felt like I needed a vent. So, sorry about that.

I'm glad everyone's okay and there wasn't a bad accident. Sounds scary. Good for you guys for taking the keys away and refusing to give them back. Obviously the guy wasn't "ok" to be driving and he could've killed someone with his dangerous behavior.

I hear ya, drunk driving is the dumbest thing an adult could do, IMHO.

A few years ago I was in a horrendous car crash that took my grandmother's life due to a drunk driver.

Yes, I think it's really selfish too.

(I heard that fight wasn't the best either so it didn't sound like you had a great night all round!)

Any reason why you didn't call the police to the scene?

That's my thought, too.
Taking the guys car keys could be construed as theft. Not that I think it was wrong, just that it's risky.

Agree with the above posters (all of them really lol). By tomorrow, there will be no way to prove that he was intoxicated, but proving that someone else has his keys will be easy. The law doesn't always support those who were ethically right, only those who were legally right.

That said... It was definitely the ethically right thing to do. Living in Las Vegas and working on the main strip for a few years has given me an extreme distaste for drunk drivers. I actually had a couple of coworkers in my civilian job hit by a drunk driver who happened to be a soldier in my National Guard unit. The couple is dead, the girl from my unit is in jail, and I have no doubt this will haunt her the rest of her life. She was a good person, sober, but people do stupid things when they get trashed. I'm not gonna go all anti alcohol, but I personally choose not to drink period. I'd rather not put myself into a position to make life altering mistakes when I'm not thinking clearly.

I've been in accidents (Yes with an 's') causes by drink drivers. Honestly it should be ZERO TOLERANCE, and you should get jail Time If you are caught .

Pls excuse typos, on a cell web browser and it sucks.

Ya i would have called the police definitely, you can call them even if you suspect someone is drunk, i would have told him i'm calling him a cab, then waited till they got there.

We decided not to call the police as it had been a LONG day for me and I was tired and I feared that leaving the other sober guy alone with the drunk driver would have resulted in a pretty nasty fight. I acted like a "peacemaker" at the scene.

I just wanted to get away. I hate drunk drivers and I wasn't really in the mood to be a referee in a street fight. I had been up the thick end of 19 hours and despite being fully awake and fresh, I just wanted to sink a cup of tea and go to bed.

Any other time, I would have. No problem.

Alcohol makes normal people do dumb ****. Drunk driving is indefensible but the very nature of alcohol is what makes people think they're ok to drive

My dad was hit by a drunk driver years back. It happened in a local street (where my grandparents live, dad was on his way to visit them) so people knew the drunk driver, seeing he was drunk a neighbour took him a shot of Whiskey to 'calm his nerves and help with the shock' so when the police gave a test(which he wouldve failed) he could say 'it was the whiskey Mr X gave me to help with the shock'

Look after your own eh...

I think it should be zerotol too. If the law states that we can't drive with a little bit of drugs in us, why are we allowed to with a little bit of alcohol.

The first thing to go when getting drunk is the ability to reason.
The time to beat the drunks ass is when he is on his way to getting drunk knowing that he/she will be driving later.

I like the idea of taking his keys away, Ive thrown the keys into the woods before when similar situations have come up.

People do the stupidest **** in their cars. Speaking of which, the other night I had a group of guys driving along next to me for ages trying to get me to race them and filming me with their camera. Arsewipes! I phoned that one through to the traffic cops - hopefully when they pulled them over further up the road, their car was full of heaps of incriminating stuff.

The only time *I* have ever reported some people to the police is when I saw kids throwing "something" into the traffic as I was driving home after work one evening.

It could have been pebbles, rocks, rose buds or marshmallows. I don't know. But the fact is people were having to swerve, brake, move, whatever.

The ordeal I had to go through, though! My name, my number, my address, my job... I was on the phone 5 damn minutes before I could report ANYTHING.

My country LOVES red tape. Ugh!
