Here is a clip and summary:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/08/18...gan/index.html

I was really hoping my dad would watch this, or at least record it and watch it later because heart disease is a problem on his side of our family. Unfortunately, their power went out and he wasn't able to do either.

Maybe they'll run it again.

I just happened to leave CNN on from earlier in the day when you mentioned the program. When I stopped watching shows from my DVR, I tuned in right at the very beginning of the program. I recorded and watched it. It was a good. I love how many people on the show were swearing that a healthy vegan diet with little oil could almost cure heart disease.

One scene I loved if when they talked about cutting out animal products, they mentioned that those industries think it's a terrible idea for us to cut out those ingredients.. It then had very short clips of people from those industries saying something positive. All 3 sounded stupid, to be honest. They were all vague about why it was "healthy."

Beef industry: "Incorporating lean beef into a healthy diet can actually help you stick to a healthy diet because it's a good that people enjoy."

Eggs: "Eggs are a source of 13 vitamins and minerals. Eggs are the gold standard when it comes to protein."

Dairy: "Dairy foods are very nutrient rich. You get a lot of nutrients for every calorie you consume."

From a doctor "Most doctors eat meat because most Americans eat meat. So if they don't really see so for themselves or their own families why it might be a good idea to cut back or even cut meat out of your diet all together, they won't be so inclined to recommend it for their patients."

Narrator: Even doctors who do see the benefits of the diet, may not recommend it to patients.
Doctor: Anyone who's able to do that diet can have dramatic success. The problem is many people are unable or unwilling to make these changes and so in my practice, I try to take baby steps.

Isn't it sad that people don't care about themselves enough to cut out these products?

I read an article about it on CNN. The comments were nothing short of ignorance. One commenter said something to the extent that meat probably doesn't cause heart problems, that it is probably the bad carbs. I kept reading but left b/c I was so irritated by the ignorance.

Did anyone who watched it notice they listed fries as a source of cholesterol? Did they mean saturated and trans fat that turns into cholesterol? As we all know, actual cholesterol is only animal based.

I am learning that lesson. Staying away from the comments altogether seems like a good plan. It should would save me from a lot of negative feelings. The comments often infuriate me.

I think omni's are generally defensive about eating meat. You could tell them that there was a new cut of beef that tasted awesome but cut your life in half if you ate it once. They would happily grill it up. These are the people that comment on these things. Its not the type of person I can even relate to- its better to not even read them.

I noticed that actually, and I had to correct him quietly to myself. Well my Dad was watching too so I'm sure he heard me.

Anyways, my mom might have heart disease (she had a stress test yesterday) so my dad watched the program with me. He's a total omni and actually eats almost nothing BUT junk food, meat, and cheese...I've never seen him eat a raw vegetable. But while he was watching the program he kept commenting in a positive manner.

My mom has been vegan for over a week now and this show just assured me (and probably my dad) that it's the best thing for her heart.

I think shows like this are awesome, even though there are inevitably stupid comments on the website from people who have to rain on others' parades. But as someone else said, eventually you learn to avoid the comments.
It's amazing how much changing your diet can improve your health in a short period of time. This isn't the first time I've heard of a vegan dieting curing cancer/heart disease.

Thanks for the kind words you guys! My mom has already said going vegan was "the best thing [she's] ever done" and that she doesn't miss cheese or meat at all. I was so surprised, because she used to eat dairy at every meal and snack! She's been so good; I'm so proud! She's also lost 11 lbs and her Doctor thought veganism would be great for her.

The CNN program was so encouraging. I hope a lot of people got inspired to eat more plants!

I'm so happy for your Mom That's really awesome. I wish my Mom would change her diet, even if it's just partially. I want my Mom to live longer than both of her parents did. I want my kids to grow up with their Grandma.
