Dog saves owner from fire, dies trying to rescue cat

ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin (AP) -- After a disabled woman's cat started a house fire, her specially trained dog came to the rescue, then died trying unsuccessfully to rescue the cat.

Jamie Hanson said her 13-year-old dog Jesse brought her artificial leg and a phone she used to call 911.

"She got me outside and then she heard the cat upstairs and she went up there to get the cat, and she wouldn't come back to me," Hanson, 49, said at a news conference Monday at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, where she was being treated for her injuries.

She received third-degree arm burns in the fire Sunday night at her home in Rhine, south of Elkhart Lake. Both pets died.

Hanson, who lost a leg in a car accident three years ago, said she was on the couch watching television when the cat ran over the back of the couch.

"And he jumped onto a table that had a candle on it and tipped it over and lighted the artificial plants on fire," she said.

Hanson said she fell off the couch and was unable to get her artificial leg from the table, "so my dog got my leg for me and went and got the phone and brought the phone to me so I could call 911."

I feel bad for the lady and her companion animals, but does it strike anyone else as a little foolish for her to keep lighted candles around when she has limited mobility and animals that may knock over the candles?

Aw. That dog was trained well, I'm glad the training worked for what it was meant for. Too bad about the dog and the cat though

That's so sad. Imagine how stuck that lady will now be without her helper, without even going into the grief she must be feeling.

That said, I agree with Skylark about the whole candles thing.

Yeah, poor judgment. Fortunately the dog was able to make up for it to some degree.

What a smart and responsible dog. I hope he is honored in a ceremony or something.

I am sure she realizes that now. Thank God she lived to learn the lesson.

I don't like it this story. It makes me

On another message board I go to (that has nothing to do with veg*nism), someone mentioned how they had an apartment fire and she didn't even THINK about getting her dog. The firefighters found him later dead under the bed from smoke inhalation.

Wow that is a horribly sad story. It was so beautiful to feel the dogs heart though, knowing how much he loved the cat and wanted to save it. They died together, hopefully they are in a better place now. Just super sad though.

That reminds me of our cat. Most cats I see seem fairly graceful and careful jumping on things, but this one, when it jumps the gate, there is this reverberating SMACK as it hits it then climbs over. Maybe the others that come here get more practice or something.
