Does anyone have a phobia or feel strongly phobic about something? First I’ll toss up some definitions here so we’re all on the same page. I’ll just pull some stuff from a search on answers.com because I don’t feel like running downstairs to get the DSM-IV-TR, so here goes:

pho•bi•a

A persistent, abnormal, or irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid the feared stimulus.

Most psychologists and psychiatrists divide phobias into three categories:

• Social phobias - fears to do with other people and social relationships such as performance anxiety, fears of eating in public, etc.

• Specific phobias - fear of a single specific panic trigger, like dogs, flying, running water and so on.

• Agoraphobia - a generalized fear of leaving your home or your small familiar 'safe' area, and of the inevitable panic attacks that will follow. Agoraphobia is the onlyphobia regularly treated as a medical condition.

http://www.answers.com/phobia

Here is list of the technical names for most of the "known" phobias:

http://phobialist.com/

I have pediophobia which is fear of dolls. I don’t completely loose my mind or anything, but I seriously will alter my behavior in order to avoid coming into contact with dolls. I really can’t stand being around them, in a store or someone’s house. I especially hate those porcelain ones!!!!

i used to be afraid of spiders. then i realized that they wernt monsters they were just another creature.

clowns REALLY creep me out. my grandmother has a clown statue that was terrified as a baby. if i saw it i started screaming. i still dont like it(but i dont dry anymore when i see it)

dark water. i guess im a good swimmer but for some reason, dark water even swimming pools kinda freak me out.

on a side note. my sister has a collection of porcelin dolls. when she was living in my mom house she would wake up with all the dolls heads turned looking at her(they dont have jointed necks.) she would also have her hair pulled when she was alone in the room and the door was shut.

I'm claustrophobic. Have been my whole life. I will go out of my way to avoid feeling shut in, crowded or without enough air.

I'm claustrophobic too. I can be in the tiniest space, like a closet or a crawl-space under my bed, as long as I know I can easily make it out and no one's around to block my way. However, if there's the slightest chance I won't be able to get out, I freak out. I even get this way if I think I'm going to be stuck 'in' an article of clothing (like a too-small t-shirt).

Incidently, I have trouble breathing in small spaces, even if it's just my head under the covers of my bed. I used to think that was a reaction to fear, before I was diagnosed with asthma! I think the heat or humidity of 'recycled' air triggers my asthma, which probably actually causes some of the panic I feel.

You may laugh, but slugs. I find them repulsive and freak out if I'm anywhere near one. Interestingly enough a close relation of mine also has a phobia of them and someone once played a joke by putting a couple of tiger (leopard??) slugs in her glass at a party.

I used to have a phobia of loud noises when I was a child. When I think phobia, I think, will do almost anything to get away from, will completely lose all composure if exposed.

I get paranoid when I watch or read certain things, but I'm generally not that scared a person. I probably have phobias I don't know about yet.

When I was a kid I would have nightmares there were monsters in the toilet, and they would get you at night, when you were most exposed and least aware.

I am scared of wasps. I run whenever I see or hear one. Sometimes I feel a wasp land on my shoulder, freak out, and realize it was just my hair on my shoulder!

I am scared of balloons when they are in other people's hands, especially if they are highly inflated. It's ok if I have a balloon or if a balloon is just laying there, but if someone else is handling a balloon I freak out. I am always afraid that they will pop it right in front of my face and that the sudden noise will give me a huge shock and that a flying piece of rubber is going to hit my face.

sharks. seeing their gums exposed andtheir teeth makes me shudder uncontrolably. I will not even touch a book with a shark. When we go to bookshops, Spiderman has to turn the covers of shark books backwards so i cannot see their teeth and gums. My heart will pound so loud (loud enough for everyone around me to hear) when I see one accidently. Don't even get me started about the Jaws music. I hate it when people hum it for a joke.

Peter and the Wolf. I had an albumof this as a child and the cover art seriously scared the hell out of me. The wolf had an elongated jaw and sharp teeth and red gums (see a pattern here?) and was drooling and I had nightmares until we removed the album from our house. I still cannot hear the music--even those opening notes without shivering. Even an oboe can make me feel queasy. Once I was helping to paint my MIL's kitchen whilst listening to public radio and it came on. I was on top of the ladder and shook so much that the ladder nearly fell. i felt as if the words were stuck in my throat--I had a real panic attack. I kept trying to say "turn it off, turn it off, turn it off!" but I was just paralized. Spiderman walked in at that moment and rushed to turn it off, but I was so shaken I had to go lie down.

Roaches, several times I've woken up in the middle of the night convinced they're on my face and attacked my face (I've done it with other people there 3 times and 2 of those they thought I was having a seizure). If I see one I have to leave the area ASAP or I'll freak out. Until middle school I was . convinced that if one touched me I would die

Ditto, although mine seems to have worsened as I've gotten older. I don't mind crowds in general too much, but a crowded bus or, yikes, a crowded subway (in a tunnel, with the doors shut, in the dark)...just shoot me now. We were watching this movie a couple of months ago with a scene where a woman gets caught in a tunnel while cave-exploring. Oh man, I think I sweated out about a gallon until she was freed.

Spelunking is definitely not a Brandon-friendly activity.

I'm slowly getting over my phobia of phoning people, but it has made parts of my life very difficult.

I was like that when I was a kid. I still have a really hard time phoning strangers (I hate ordering food over the phone), but when I was younger my mom forced to me to call everyone we knew to sell Girl Scout cookies. It always turned into this huge battle, with me crying, typing numbers in, then just sitting there without pressing 'send' until it expired, then doing it all over again... Girl Scout cookie season was the bane of my life. It was awful.

I remember when my wife and I (not married at the time) were in college, I saw her bending down in the library parking lot. She was making trips to the side and then going back and bending down. As I got closer I saw that she was picking up the worms and putting them in the grass. You see, it had rained quite heavily that morning and there were a lot of worms that had come out making there way across the parking lot. The sun had come out and they would likely have dried out and died so she was saving them. Oddly enough she's not a vegetarian, not yet anyway.
