for a croupy cough? for the past two weeks, i've had this horrible cough that keeps me up at night...which means i'm dragging all day. it began with a cold, the congestion has cleared up, but the blasted cough remains!

this happened to me about 2 years ago. then, i visited my doctor and was told that it was viral and it would work itself out. suggested mucinex. i'd really rather not take that...so any suggestions? thanks!

lots of fluids....sometimes a viral cold can end up a bacterial upper respiratory infection though requiring antibiotics, just because the crud sits there, and then allows the bacteria to start growing in it. What color is your phlegm, is it white, yellow, green or tan colored? is it thick or thin? a netti pot can also help get the junk out of your nose and sinuses.

Are you taking any kind of over the counter expectorants? sometimes it's just better to bite the bullet for a little while to help your body fight this stuff than to suffer and drain your immune system...totally up to you though, but don't discount antibiotics if really needed. stock up on lots of colorful fruits and veggies during this time too, to help boost your immune system.

Mucinex reduces mucus (thick) secretions, making it easier to clear the throat.
Honey, ginger with lemon, Hyssop or Horehound would be some health food store remedies...

Use a humidifier/vaporizer, prop your head up high on pillows. It helps me to cover my face with a sheet, so I'm inhaling warm, moist air rather than cool, dry air. I had this exact issue last night. It sucks.

I absolutely love the herb teas formulated just for colds/coughs/sinus. my favorite is Yogi Tea -Breathe Deep. Inhaling vapors is soothing on your nasal passages, and feels good on the throat, and helps loosen congestion.
Tastes a bit licorice-cy, but I still like even though I don't like black licorice.

Neti pot- really good to do on a regular basis for allergy and cold season esp, but if you're already congested probably won't be able to go through the sinus

Don't allow yourself to get winded or sweaty. Stay calm and relaxed.

Lemon and honey has been a staple for coughs. Also a tablespoon of honey with a pinch of turmeric. Honey and ginger.

Yea, as a veteran I really like to hang out with other vets. I also find great satisfaction in supporting military families during the extremely difficult times they face with wounded and KIA personnel. I worked the Blue to Gold ceremony two weeks ago. It was very difficult to watch the suffering. The mothers really appreciated us being there. The families need to know that people care for their loved ones like they do. They also need to be able to relax knowing that if protesters show up we'll handle it. They will never need to worry about that. The patriot guard riders serve out of love.

I appreciate the fact that you and others give your time to, and that the family has some protection. It's one thing to be against the wars, but DON'T take it out on a grieving family. Thankfully, people give of their time as you do.

Slippery Elm Bark (I have a coworker with a horrible cough and I make him suck on one of these lozenges and and he's good), water, honey, hot teas, elderberry, etc. Good luck and feel better!
