I'm just curious to see who writes letters to the editor and what kind of stuff you write about. I am just writing three to the Winnipeg Free Press. They're kind of silly, but people love to read the trivial ones.

Also, do you write letters to your local politicians regarding laws, environmental action, etc.?

I'm not hoping to find any deep meaning in this thread, it's just that people I know laugh at me when I write letters because they think I'm some sort of extremist who can't just 'let things be'

I think that writting letters is one of the least 'exteme' forms of political action. If we never do anything but vote (if that), we don;t allow ourselves much poltical freedom.

I have written a few letters to politicians but had little sucess but with the government we have in BC, I didn't expect more.

yeah, i do. i used to be really into it, writing several a week, but i've slacked in that dep't. i've had a few published which is pretty cool. in some pretty big newspapers actually. woohoo! thta was exciting.

i dont do the senator/rep thing though anymore. my brother used to work in a few big name offices and well, frankly, the letters don't account for much and usally get chucked. dont mean to be negative though. i do petitions and the sort.

as for other writing..i write letters to friends all the time

I have written letters to newspapers and councils about dog issues... some got published, others didn't... I was really annoyed with my local paper for not publishing one about irresponsible dog owners! These people need education... but anyway... yes I do.

I write letters!

There is a letter to the NY Times from me in the 'In the news -> Vegetarians sick child at trial...' thread.

Extremist, bah. Get this: I write letters to politicians and I'm not even citizen of the US. I wrote the other day b/c of the zero emission cars in Calif.

I also write letters to book authors. I get MAD when someone writes about environmental issues and tells us to be good consumers but does not mention meat once.

The only rule is that I only write when I can send email cause I hate all that envelope+postage stamp business.

BTW the congressman of this area here is Hungarian too! Can this be coincidence or is this some kind of divine sign i wonder...?

I've written two and had both published in our local paper, The Free Lance-Star. One was a response to a lady's foolish assertation that working moms deprive their children and the other was in response to an anti-PETA editorial, mostly as an effort to defend the AR movement in general (because I have my own objections to PETA.)

As far as the length of the letter goes, most newspapers have a reccomended length for theirs. For instance, my newspaper here prefers letters that are 250-300 words or less.
