How do you guys refuse to do it?? I will not dissect this year, and my teacher is not happy about and when I start to talk about it, she puts it off. When we dissect, should I watch(which is disgusting!), or stay outside the room, or how?? This is the forst time I've been faced with tihs, and I would like some tips. Thanks!

I told my teacher I wasn't doing it, and wouldn't stay in the room while they did it. I said I would do an alternate assigment, which is required by law in maryland. I was very blunt with my refusal to do it, and didn't let her talk me into stay, just watching, or anything. I knew what I felt comfortable doing, and that had nothing to do with dissection.

Ask your teacher if you can do a replacement assignment that is more animal friendly such as a two-page report. Or maybe your teacher has one of those plastic model frogs that you can dissect and put back together. I'm sure between the two of you, you can work something out. If your teacher is stubborn, have your parents complain to the school.

If all else fails, cut class and copy someone else's lab report.

Like the others said, ask to do an alternative assignment. There are also 'virtual dissections' that can be done online and are completly cruelty-free! One online place to do it is at froguts.com. Although I've never tried it, I've heard it's great. When I took biology last year I took it through the local community college and one of the labs was to dissect a rat. I of course refused to do it and didn't go to class that day.

Don't be afraid to speak up about it, it's your right! And as Newman said, if your teacher isn't willing to listen or give you a different assignment, talk to the principal.

my bio teacher gave me a really hard time with it all. she told me that if i didn't do it that she would have to fail me. then i printed out this peta thing that said that it was illegal for her to force me to participate in the dissection, so she told me that i would just have to stand there and watch. then i went to the principal and told him that it was against my ethical beliefs to even be in the room during dissection, and so i was given an alternate assignment (which my bio teacher was not happy about) and the teacher got in big trouble by the principal, and now i put peta stickers (the "cut class, not frogs" ones)on her door all the time.

I wrote it into my Gifted IEP that an alternate assessment would have to be given because of my ethical beliefs.

Thus, under Kansas state law, the school is required to follow it, or risk the chance of a lawsuit. I either did not show up to class or did a computer models the days they were dissecting.

I don't reccomend being a royal pain in the ass about this, but be firm. Don't leaflet people, it's annoying for the rest of us who don't wear our AR-loving hearts on our sleeves and frankly, it's pushing beliefs on others.

I believe in doing the smallest harm possible, which is why I'm vegetarian/not dissecting, not because I believe in a huge AR movement. That's how I explain to people why I am the way I am.

Simply explain the predicament to your teacher and explain that you have moral issues with killing needlessly. Don't make a fuss about it, but don't back down and don't settle for just observing, or staying in the classroom or whatever.

While I have nothing against such artificial dissections, I am just wondering how those of you who refuse to buy or use anything that is "tested on animals" can justify using such an artificial dissection. Or do those of you who agree with artificial dissections, also agree with animal-testing? Surely the people who designed the artificial dissections needed to dissect a number of frogs in order to make sure their design was anatomically correct. In other words the accuracy of the artificial dissections was achieved by practicing on animals, pretty much the same way that the safety of drugs and cosmetics was achieved by practicing on animals.

Same goes for some of the commercial artificial meats. Most likely the people who come up with the recipes for such artificial meats repeatedly taste real meat, to compare it flavor with their recipes, and adjust their recipes.

I'm going to be in a similar situation next week when (as part of the course) we have to dissect a heart.

As much as I don't want to, I'll be present in the lesson but not participate in any of the dissecting.

It is nothing at all like dissecting a real dead frog. Dragging a scalpel across a dotted line is nothing at all like cutting in to real skin and gives you no feel whatsoever for what a real dissection is like. You don't get to see, feel, and smell, the layers of skn, and the underlying fatty tissue and muscles, nor get any kind of real sense of what they are like, how they are layered, how well or not well they adhere to each other. You don't learn how difficult, or easy, it is to cut thru skin, muscle, bone, cartledge, tendons, ligaments, muscle fascia. You just click on the scalpal and magically some layers are cut thru. You don't get to see how the blood vessels and nerves course thru the different layers. It is ridiculous.

Last year I said I wasn't doing it, even though she was unhappy. I was also getting college credits for the course, but I just said its a NYS law to not force students into dissection if it goes against their beliefs, religion, etc. I stayed in the room, although I probably shouldn't have as everyone kept teasing me and doing stupid stuff with the baby pigs. While in the room though I was on the computer doing an online dissection and thats how I studied for the test about dissection.

I remember seeing a site which gave some free cd for alternative dissection, but since it was last year I forgot it.

I'm not sure what state you are in, but you may have the right to refuse, and by law your teacher would have to give you something else. If the law is in your state, you might want to casually mention that, your teacher may take you more seriously, if you think she will give you a problem about it when the time of the dissection comes.

Thanks guys! My teacher was(surprisingly) not mad about it, and said I could do it online and write a lab report on it. The first thing they're doing is a earth worm, so does anyone know where online I could find one to do virtually??

That's great! Try going to google and searching for "online dissection" or "virtual dissection."

I know of a guy that said he was a Buddhist especially so he doesn't have to dissect. They didn't have the right to force him, and since you don't need any kind of baptism to be Buddhist, they could only trust his word

My teacher was extremely understanding. He told me I didn't have to do it before I even had to explain why I didn't want to. I got to go to the library for a week and learn about all the organs in a pig, then take a test, which was unfortunately from observing the dissected pigs.

I told my teacher that it is against my religion. (it is, Im Wiccan) Also told her that I have rats at home as pets, and I will NOT cut them apart. I didnt have to do another assignment, since there was a school trip on that day that I was attending.

Yeah, I just told my teacher that I couldn't do it and she was fine with it. O course, that didn't stop her from making me take the observing dead frogs test, but for the actual dissection she just let me fill out our lab from the textbook.

This year, my bio teacher says that we probably won't have time to get around to dissection (yay!) but she's using dissection as an award for doing well. As in, should we finish everything/ be a very good class then she will "reward" us with the right to cut open dead things. How messed up is that? But that shows that dissection is NOT a neccessary part of the course, and that teachers should most definetly allow alternatives and crap, not like that wasn't already a given fact...

Before i was vegetarian we had to dissect hearts and eye balls. i did it bacause i didn't know anything about vegetarianism and animal rights but when i learned more about animal cruelty and became vegetarian. i still didn't know that much about it so i dissected the heart and i feel reeeaaaly guilty about that and how stupid i was. but i refused to dissect a rat. my friend and others also refused but because it made them feel sick. i did it because of my ethical beliefs and my teacher was ok with that but she told me to watch but i wouldn't even watch and was trying to fight the tears back.

me and my friend went outside and she asked me why i refused to dissect the rat but not the sheep heart and i stupidly said "oh because its different and i'm not eating it so its ok" how stupid and ignorant was i espesialy because i was vegetarian. anyway i still feel really guilty. i have alot of regrets espesialy in biology but i won't get into it now.

i'm not doing biology this year but if i chose it i would refuse to dissect or use any living creature and make it clear why.
