so i'm fed up with my job big time. i've been working for the state as a legal assistant/paralegal for 8 years and i think its time to get my a$$ in gear and move on to bigger and better things. i've been doing some research and someone with my experience should could be making almost twice what i make now, (which would be a really really great living) in the private sector. BUT im very concerned about the hiring process. im very confident in my skills, but my appearance (i am overweight) is going to be a major factor when it comes to being hired. im no fool, i know people discrimiate, im just curious as to what extent.

to anyone that has experiencing hiring - what is your first impression when someone that is overweight/obese comes into your office for an interview? i mean, do looks really win over experience and skill?

to anyone that may be or have been in the same boat as i am, what are your experiences? do you feel the discrimination is real or am i being overly insecure?

Thanks!

It is real, I remember reading a study that found something like 70% of employers were less willing to hire obese people than non-obese. But it was REALLY obese people, around the 300lb+ area. I don't think too many employers consciously discriminate against people who have a few extra pounds, but subconciously they make all sorts of judgements on applicants' appearances, especially women.

It's extra frustrating that weight would be a discriminating factor when physical factors really aren't an issue in doing the job. What a superficial bunch of crap.

My advice: put on your best suit, brush up on interview skills, know your stuff, and knock their socks off.

Yeah, I read a study to where it says that being overweight, less attractive and older can cause discrimination for women

but i think it doesn't mean you won't be hired, just dress professionally so it underlines your best characteristics and be well prepared and it should be good a place you want to work for will hire you for your professional qualities anyways

While there might be some prejudice, I'd think your bigger problem in finding a job might come from something you mentioned in the insomnia thread - use of "medical" marijuana. From my experience, most business/office jobs these days do standard drug testing on all potential employees. I'm not sure how far back the "whiz quiz" can detect such things, but you may want to consider refraining for a while if you're going job hunting.

Oh no, I appreciate the honesty. I'd rather know what i'm getting myself into so i can prepare for the worst (and hope for the best) that way it wont be such a reality shock to me. I'm trying to get over my insecurities and take these sort of things less personally, so tough love is good!

thanks Earthing.

yeah, I've decided to give it up for a good long while anyhow, since I tend to use it as an excuse for my overeating. trying to take some steps in the right direction and stop living in the land of denial...thanks fromper.

The pot is going to be a bigger problem than the weight. Stop smoking weed so you can pass a pee test, and for god's sake don't start up again. Some workplaces do random drug tests.

I won't lie, some people/companies won't want to hire you due to your weight. But you don't want to work for people like that anyway. I used to be obese but it was never an obstacle to finding a job.

Good luck.

I have stopped - for other reasons. But I've never heard of a law firm pee testing and if they did, it wouldn't be a place I'd like to work at. What I do in the privacy of my own home is my business so long as it doesn't affect my work. Which it never has and never will. Anyway the weed has nothing to do with I'm asking here. I'm not looking for say no to pot lectures.

Thanks for part 2 of your post though.

Uh I wasn't moralizing at you, I was just stating facts. No need to pull a 'tude.

Tude? Ok tough guy. No tude whatsoever, just saying that smoking has nothing to do with the questions I asked so there is no reason to even bring it up. Factual or not, it's irrelevant to the thread, so cool your jets. And Fromper is going to get a time out.

No personal experience but thought this was a positive, helpful article. Obviously a couple of the things they mention are a veg*n no no but you can find suitable alternatives if you don't already have them.

I just thought I'd point out that drug testing seems to be a standard part of hiring these days, so this would be the time to take a break, at least until you get a new job. Just thought I'd throw it out there, on the topic of job hunting. Again, no moralizing, just a recommendation.

I don't really think they discriminate on "chubby" or "slightly overweight" if you have the right know-how and dress/act very well. It's really the morbidly obese people that may not get a job offer, and I'm not sure that's discrimination as much as realizing they may not be able to perform all the job requirements, and/or they wouldn't want to eventually have to provide insurance for someone who is morbidly obese.

Anyway, If that's you in your profile picture you're very lovely, and I am sure VERY hirable. And it doesn't hurt to look or try!! The worst thing in life is to have a job you hate, or a circumstance you hate. I think it is AWESOME you are doing something about it! Let us know how it all goes!

Amazing! 100 pound loss, I'm totally inspired! I have a good amount to lose too, and sometimes I get really discouraged but hearing a success story always seems to pop me back to the right frame of mind. Thanks again for your positive feedback.
