I know that its not good for the baby to be stressed, but I have a somewhat stressful job :-( So I need lots of ideas on how to de-stress - I've never been good at this. I don't like massages and I have a hard time relaxing in general. Can you share with me your best relaxation ideas? Thank you sooo much!

Have you tried meditation or hatha yoga? There must be classes that you can sign up for in your area. Both are extremely effective in reducing stress and neither have to be very time consuming- especially once you learn how to do them on your own.

Hi veggielove

I definitely agree about yoga - most yoga centres have ante-natal yogal classes specifically designed for de-stressing and keeping the muscles supple - thereby helping prevent backpain and muscle ache. I really urge you to give it a try. If you don't want to go to a class buy a yoga DVD - I would highly recommend the one by Shiva Rea - she is excellent and her DVD goes through all the trimesters so you can do it all the way through.

I am with you on the massage thing - it's funny when you tell people you don't really like it they look at you like you're a freak! But I tell you what I really liked - having my husband brush my hair! I know it sounds weird but when I was all strung out from work or just general pregnancy worries I found it really helped.

Chamomile tea is also great for destressing.

How far on are you now - how exciting!

i'll third the yoga...

i think it was just wonderful for dealing with all that 'extra' i had going on during pregnancy (i went to school full time, held two jobs part time and moved twice during my pregnancy- Whoa!)

i became addicted and did it every single morning, and often later in the day bacause it would keep my stress levels down so much AND it seemed to last

<-- this little guy almost looks as if he's meditating.

i bought a yoga for your pregnancy DVD and donated it to my midwives' library after I'd memorized the entire routine.

i'm pretty sure it assised me with an incredibly swift and wonderful homebirth too!

congratulations! enjoy! i LOVED being pregnant and am secretly jealous of all the pregnant mamas i know...

Thanks for the replies everyone - I am very early on, just the second month!!! So I am of course still petrified of something bad happening.... so I hope the de-stressing yoga tapes will help! Any and all advice is graciously accepted!!!!

the yoga video that i made is prenatal appropriate--particularly first trimester--and then after that it's also appropriate if you follow the instructions.

I took my calcium supplement just before going to bed. It is a natural muscle relaxer and it helped me sleep so much better.

A hot shower works great for me. Although I'm partial to long showers.

Are hot showers ok? I was told not to shower too hot, that it was bad for the baby.... so I've been sorta freezing in the shower lately, lol. :) THanks for all the replies! :)

you can take warm showers. if you're acclimated to it, so is the baby honestly. it's the same with 'hot yoga.' some women can handle it, and some women can't.

have you looked into hypnobirthing and/or hypnobabies? it's a method to prepare for labor, but the method is also for deep relaxation otherwise. definately worth looking into.
