Today was my first day with vegetarianism. I'm very proud of myself. I went out last night and got all kinds of veg things. For breakfast I had an omellete (substitute of course) I added some veggie cheese and some tofu and it was great. I could eat the just about every morning! For lunch I had vegetarian pizza and I just had my dinner of veggie pizza burgers. I haven't given up milk comepletely yet. I still use it in the small things and in very small amounts. I'll be working on giving it all up. I haven't had any real cravings yet and hopefully they don't come at all. I've never really liked drinking milk straight or even eating alot of meat. I'd have a ham sandwich like every other month or each small amounts on holidays so I don't think it will be that hard to give up. If there is anything I should know about what and what not to eat please let me know since I'm just starting out.

Thanks~

Ashley

Well, Ashley, first of all, welcome to VB!

Second, you're off to the races. It sounds like you're using a lot of replacements, and that's always a great transition. I did the same myself when becoming vegan, and still use analogues occasionally. I found it helpful and healthier to branch out over time as I learned some recipes.

There's a bunch of great books listed throughout this site (try a search, say "favorite" and "recipe book" to see what you come up with). Also, www.vegweb.com is great for recipes. I'd learn about a food I'd never had before, like tempeh, and then I'd do a search there for dozens of recipes incorporating that item, picking the easiest, fastest one to start with, then working my way toward more sophisticated recipes.

Also search for "kreeli" and "website" to find another good recipe database. I'm blanking on the actual URL, but that search ought to bring up the thread that has a link.

Good luck, and welcome to veg*nism (applies to vegetarianism or veganism)!

Congrats, Ashley!!

It feels great, doesn't it? And it sounds like you're doing very well! It's good that you've been able to cut back on the dairy so soon!! It took me a while to give up milk - I used to love the stuff. I drink soy now, and my conscience thanks me.

If you find yourself craving meat, check out some of the meat substitutes out there. There's everything from veggie chicken nuggets to ribs! Over time you might not even want that stuff, though. Well, that's what happened to me. There are lots of great dairy substitutes also! Tofutti makes a great non-dairy sour cream! Ice cream and cream cheese too! It's almost impossible to feel deprived!

Hope you enjoy yourself, here! Good luck on your veg journey!

Welcome and Congrats!

Like epski said, branch out - I use meat analogs (Or as I call them "Smeat") often due to convenience, but experiment w/ beans and tofu and stuff. And as for dairy - good job reducing the amount you use! I switched to Silk soymilk - I like it better than regular milk. You'll find tons of iinfo and support here.

Welcome to VB!

Youve had lots of great advises, but from me, a word of warning:

Don't just jump in to veggism. Things can get a little bumpy. Make sure you know what you are doing.

Thanks so much Flower. I needed a congrats right now. I know what I'm doing is my choice and I know it's the right choice for me but it's harder than it seems.

Hey Ashley! Good luck on becoming veg*n! I became vegetarian the day I read an article by John Robbins and then went vegan a few months later.
