Believe it or not, I'm 33 years old, and I've NEVER had a date on Valentine's Day. I've never been in a long term relationship that's lasted more than about 8 months, and by sheer coincidence, I've just never been in relationships in mid-February. And I avoid hunting for first dates on VD just for the sake of having a date that day. That's just lame.

Usually, I don't care, but since my last breakup, it's just been a while since I've had a girlfriend, so I've started actively looking again the last few weeks, with no success. The fact that the online dating sites and everything are making a big deal about VD just annoys me.

How about the rest of you?

I do have a bf this year but many of my years I have not (I am 37). Just think about it this way, you save yourself some money! No present to buy, no dinner to pay for. You can spend it on yourself if you like! (I wish I could do this for Xmas - that is such an expensive holiday!)

For me, I would rather have no date than end up on a first date on V-day 'just to have a date'. Even worse, is when someone doesn't break up with someone just because V-day is coming up and they don't want to be dateless.

Although, my bf and I are doing something (just dinner really), if I had no bf I would probably just make myself my favorite meal and buy a nice vegan dessert and curl up with my favorite chick flick!

I will admit I used to freak out about not having a date on V-day but than I realized it is just one day and it passes fast so no worries for me.

I have had girlfriends in the past on VD but not for the past couple of years.

It doesn't particularly bother me, especially not just VD in particular.

There are a lot worse things than being single on VD, though I totally understand why it's annoying with all the hype and commercialism that accompanies 2/14.

I've never had a Valentine's Day date Aaaaand I couldn't care less. Valentine's Day is... not exactly my cup of tea. (I could expand on this, but I shall be quiet. Ahem. ^_^)

Think about it this way: Valentine's Day is a day when you're supposed to be romantic. Everybody is telling you that's when you should be romantic.

But when you're truly in love, you don't need a special day to show it. Every day can be Valentine's Day.

Not sure that makes the dateless feel any better, but at least I tried.

In my opinion, this is what makes Valentine's Day so un-romantic, and what makes it so distasteful to me. Nothing beats honest spontaneity!! Still, I do realise a lot of people go all out on VD. It's one of those wonderfully subjective topics...

I lived alone for 10 years and have spent many new year's eves without a date, sometimes even all by myself because I didn't want people feeling sorry for me... in the end I decided it was no big deal. These "special" days are just special because we decide they are (as others have been saying before me in this thread). Once you look upon them as ordinary days that, in this particular culture and also because of commercial reasons, are made out to be special, it feels different.

My advice: book a spa treatment, massage, pedicure, whatever you like, get a nice half bottle of wine and your favorite deli dish, rent a great movie (preferably a funny one) and LOVE YOURSELF. It's not pathetic, one should actually do this more regularly !

I only had a date once during Valentine's day, man that was ages ago. It was with my boyfriend at the time, and we had a huge fight where I ended up in tears. So really I have no problem with being alone for V-day. I'm starting to wonder what the big deal is with it at all, really.

ETA: I agree with missbelgium. think of it is a day to love yourself. i know i'm looking forward to my personal night when i get home tomorrow night with some cheap nail polish, movies and cookie dough. V-day is all about cookie dough.

I'm 37 and also dateless for VD. Some years it's easier than others - this year is a middle of the road year. I'm more worried about our terrible weather than I am about who I may or may not spend time with today.

I'm 29 (oh, fine, 30. But I won't admit to it in public) and dateless this VD but I honestly don't care. I'm one of those who would be MUCH more excited about flowers on a random Tuesday in Mid-April than on Feb 14th.

I made the mistake of going to a restaurant before class tonight. I couldn't figure out why my little hole-in-the-wall fave place was overflowing with couples. I'd totally forgotten that it was Valentines. I got stuck at a tiny little table w/out a light so I couldn't even do my homework.
