Wow, why would anyone even vote to pass that? It's obvious that they're trying to hide what's going on in the slaughterhouses. If they were taking care of the animals until they die and not torturing them or killing then inhumanely, why would they care so much about cameras?

Remember how I said that I think the US are scary sometimes? I've been convinced otherwise, but this is where I take it up again <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":(">

Isn't there a right to information or press or something like that, which protects against things like this? The same reason the media gets away with everything it does? Or am I mistaken?

Rights? What in the world are you talking about? Of course no one has rights when faced with Big Meat.

We have the freedom of information act in the UK I think. I am so glad we've not stuff like this at the moment. It's horrendous to think people want to hide abuse.

I'm more surprised it didn't pass in the other states first, actually. NY is probably just a bit more corrupt. Hopefully it doesn't make it all the way through. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":(">

I can't believe this. NY is awesome. I love this state. We usually have the most liberal, awesome laws. I forget who my state senator is but I'm virtually flipping him off right now.

Thta's what I was thinking. VERY surprised it didn't pass in Iowa. But we shouldn't write any of them off just yet. Big Ag is hugely powerful. These are going to keep popping up.

"the government" is elected by the people, who can change it when they get fed up. It's businesses and special interests having an agenda and influence (that we people allow) that is the problem.

Has the Iowa one only passed the House so far? I was looking at <a href="http://coolice.legis.state.ia.us/Cool-ICE/default.asp?Category=billinfo&Service=Billbook&menu=false&hbill=hf589" target="_blank">the bill itself</a>, and I think so, but I can't find really all that much about it. Apparently Monsanto is funding it (whoop-dee-do, no surprise there!), and I did find these articles.<br><br><a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dave-murphy/aggag-2011-what-does-agri_b_868514.html" target="_blank">http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dave-m..._b_868514.html</a><br><a href="http://news.change.org/stories/republican-consultant-speaks-out-against-iowa-ag-gag-bill" target="_blank">http://news.change.org/stories/repub...wa-ag-gag-bill</a><br><br><a href="http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/S5172-2011" target="_blank">And here is the NY one in detail</a>. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":(">

Yeah. Theoretically it is still alive I guess, but has been declared dead by industry sources just today.

It should be clarified - "passed" just means made it out of committee. A vote on the floor is still needed. Before it can be voted on it needs to be sponsored. Apparently no one in the state senate has stepped up to the plate. This year's session ends June 20. It is very likely dead.<br><br><div class="quote-container"><span>Quote:</span>

The representative who introduced the Iowa bill was a very poor advocate for it. Really insulting to folks who didn't support it. Probably did as much to contribute to its failure as anyone did.<br><br>
Additionally I'm sure some of the things that contributed to the failure in Minnesota also contributed in Iowa. In Minnesota (my state!) the bill was actually opposed by some ag organizations. Also, here it was seen as a Republican 'pet project' that took focus away from economic issues.
