I'm currently doing my English degree and do some creative writing modules and a few literature ones, which I hate.

Creative writing is my favourite, but I'm struggling so much with ideas for my dissertation. I have to do something in the young adult genre as my supervisor is a young adult author. I've never struggled to write anything before, so this is getting really horrible for me. It feels terrible I also have to do something for my writing for children module, and that's just as bad.

Anyone have any ideas on how to start getting ideas down or even start making plans?

I think you'll like this, it always helped me A LOT. Have someone you know make a collage on a 3X5 card out of magazine pictures. They can use whatever pictures they want, and it doesn't have to be pretty or neat or anything. Have them give it to you, and use that as your inspiration. It never fails to help me out.

Ooh, that's a really good idea. I'll get my mom to do that later.

I should probably check newspapers as well to get some ideas. An old English teacher that I had suggested that I try to get some ideas from a newspaper article and make up an elaborate story from that, because you never know what you're going to end up writing....

I'm one of those writers that lets the story write itself as well. My characters tell me what they would or wouldn't do so I listen to them. It sounds crazy but I never know what my story is going to do until I've written it.

I'm the same way. I have vague ideas, but I tend to just let things flow.
