I haven't been veg for too long, maybe 5 months. I never really ate meat even when I was omni but I have weird cravings for things that I don't even want to eat, it's difficult to explain. I passed by McDonald's the other day and started thinking about their food and a big mac. For about a minute my mind was telling me "Oh, yea, Big Mac's look pretty, go get one." Then, I actually thought about it and I was completely grossed out by the thought of eating one. I think because when I was young McDonald's was a happy place it is more of my mind seeking nostalgia than me actually craving a burger. Has anyone else experienced this?

McDonald's works very hard to make sure American children grow up thinking of McDonald's as "a happy place" with tons of advertising. So you're not alone in that.

See:
http://articles.latimes.com/2011/may...nalds-20110519
http://www.lettertomcdonalds.org/

I think those feelings will go away eventually. Sometimes it just takes time. Just keep reminding yourself that a Big Mac is nasty and cruel. You might want to try creating new traditions and memories that reflect your new values. Re-remember your memories. When you think of Ronald's McDonald, think of the charity, not the fast food restaurant (I know they're related, but the charity is actually OK). When you think of Happy Meal toys, think of cheap plastic crap from China that ends up in landfills. And if you still want a toy (for whatever reason) remember you can buy the toy separately. You don't need to buy the meal. When you think of the play area, think of a city park or another restaurant's play area. Like, ChuckECheese has a salad bar and some Carl's Jr.s have salad bars, too so that could be a little better than McDonald's. And for the record, I've brought my own food to a McDonald's when meeting up with people who adore McDonald's. They didn't kick me out, so that might be an option for you (I don't know what your situation is).

You are smart and creative and you will figure out a way to deal with these cravings without caving in. You can and will stay veg because it's the right thing to do!

My cravings have been mental as well. I used to love a good cheeseburger, and oh man, do I want one when I think about it. I think it's actually the comfort-food-ness that I'm missing - a big, greasy, salty meal that leaves you stuffed. I'm a healthy eater, but sometimes I just want that sensation and overall feeling. A meal like that was always a kind of treat for my family. Not McDonald's, but a nicer, upscale burger place where the burgers are big and fresh and juicy. It meant Saturday - a weekend reward after a busy week of hard work for my parents and tons of homework for us. I think THAT'S what I actually miss, not the beef itself.

One of these days I'm going to make a big homemade veggie burger and lather it up with ketchup, onions and mustard on a roll with lettuce. I'm going to eat it with a side of homemade fries. On a Saturday. Looking forward to it

Definitely. To this day, whenever I catch a whiff of a McDonald's it reminds me of when I was 4 years old or so and my mom would drive my grandmother to the hairdresser. It was a long trip and my grandmother would spring for hamburgers on the way home. That smell puts me right in the backseat of that car, which was a happy memory I have of the both of them. I am in no way tempted to go into a McDonald's these days, but I think it's interesting how a smell can conjure such vivid memories and nostalgia.

It's been proven that the sense of smell is the most strongly connected to memories - even longer than music, for example! So even if you don't remember that song you danced to with your girlfriend, a whiff of the same perfume might still make you remember the moment. It's really interesting!

I still get them, and it's been 6 and a half years. And longer than that since I set foot in a McDonald's; I started boycotting them pretty early on. I usually get them when I walk past a McDonald's or KFC - two places I've always despised. I think, for me, it's the part of my personality that wants to rebel. I know I've made a good decision in going veg*n, and I'm doing the right thing, and there is ALWAYS a part of me that wants to do the wrong thing. But it's our choices, not our impulses, that make us who we are, so I always choose never to give in, whether it's this or going against any of my other morals.

I have had this happen a lot lately. I miss the taste of meat, but I can't stand the thought of actually eating flesh. It's starting to really tick me off, I want fish because I haven't been able to eat any fish substitutes in the year I've been veg, I want steak and fried chicken for the same reason. I miss the convenience of a greasy burger (I miss the grease too). I feel like a bad vegetarian for wanting to eat all those things. I don't have any advice, but just so you know you're not alone.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think I'll always miss the taste but by conscious is stronger than that mean old unconscious, aside from what any psychology says ;P. Thanks for the stories, I really enjoy reading other people's experiences. BTW awesome avatar Andrealeeanne!

Last spring, I started really craving chicken. I'm not sure why, since I have been vegetarian for a while- but for whatever reason, it was pretty much all I could think about. I was dreaming about barbecue (which I never even liked before I stopped eating meat).

When I couldn't stand it anymore, I went to the grocery store and bought about three different kinds of fake chicken. Generally I try to avoid fake meat products, but they fixed the craving.

So very true. Songs really help with memory, but if I smell anything that resembles ex-girlfriends' perfumes, I'm auto transported back to memories of us dating. Sometimes the smell is so strong, I almost think they may be passing by, but then quickly realize that X moved to that city, and Y doesn't go to this uni, etc. lol.

Oh sure. On my days off I'd KILL for bacon and eggs. In the old days, I'd always cook something like that for breakfast, so in my silly brain bacon & eggs still = fun day! The WANTING is still there.

I agree with others- create your own fast food at home!

Use fake meats, or make up bean burgers, bean and mushroom burgers and make own dressing and put between a bun with salad.

You can make tacos and burritos, using bean sauce, or quinoa mixed into a mexican tomato sauce.

You could also have some falafel wraps with hummus, tabouleh and salad,

you could make some chinese stir fry with noodles up and use oyster mushrooms instead of chicken, they have a similar texture.

If you are craving shrimp/prawns, I discovered yesterday that sliced eggplant is a good substitute, especially if it is fried in garlic and oil, it has a soft texture and absorbs stuff.

I put in red lentils if I am making a bolognaise sauce, or pasta sauce, and I have a recipe somewhere for koftas made of red lentils.

Large field mushrooms are great for turning upside down and using as a pizza base, or of course you can just make a pizza with a pizza base.

Brown lentils are good for making morrocan style soups.

So, there is no reason to miss all those fast food tastes.

That happens to me too lol, a bit unnerving at times. I have an immense craving for McDonalds at the moment...big mac and fries. Get out of my head! I'm glad I'm not the only one having random urges like this. I quenched mine with Sunchips.

Anyone know a good vegan veggie patty?

I am a burger fanatic but I can not find a good fake burger. My only advise is to buy one that's made out of mushrooms, corn, rice etc and not the soy ones. The soy burgers have the weirdest aftertaste that just ruins it for me.

Every time I pass a Mc Donalds, I get like that too. But then I think how I probably wouldn't even like the taste anyway, especially w/ the eggy mayo. Yuck. And I eat fake meat all the time too, lol. I guess it's because I used to eat there a lot.

luckily i didn't grow up here so don't have any special associations with burger places. but my friend is exactly like that about McDonalds. Well, she is an omni but doesn't eat much meat and McDonalds is her favorite food as she says because of happy associations with it from childhood

I have mental cravings too for other things. a plate of wings is associated with party to me. and on special occasions i crave some traditional russian food because it was always served on the fun and special days

Oh my, that sounds lovely. Would you be willing to share the reciepe?

I agree on the sliced eggplant - grill it in the best olive oil you have, a little salt/pepper and yummmmm

This is the same for me. In the town I grew up in, there was no McDonalds, so I only had it on the rarest occasion that we went to the neighboring city. And always through the drive thru, no special fun time for me. But I do have good memories of barbeques in the summer and Christmas with my grandparents every year. Haven't had to deal with a family holiday yet since going veg, but hoping it goes well
