I think it sends a pretty clear message of what the cow was thinking.
Sad, but you gotta think about it from the cow's prespective, too. She was just charging him, and he hit his head on the gate. She could have easily have not killed him depending on where he had been standing. Animals have a sense of community just like we do... sadly, most people don't realize that. If he calf was killed, she would have been just as upset as his family was to lose him, but of course no one will see it that way. It's just "OMG EVIL COW!!"
The cow didn't kill him at all, she just charged him.
He probably should have been more careful since cows sometimes do attack people when their calves are threatened, and angus cattle are well known to be more dangerous and unpredictable than other breeds.
